This paper presents the development and results of some interventions in urban spaces using a specific set of computer interfaces, i.e., the tangible interfaces of digital graffiti implemented during cultural activities carried out as part of the Hybrid Territories project: digital media, communities, and cultural activities developed by Nomads.usp, University of São Paulo. It consists of events that aim to explore the creation of hybridisms in urban fragments so as to enrich them in multiple ways, but mainly from a sociocultural perspective.

Translation of 3 traditional textile structures to digital code to make 3D printed textiles is discussed in this paper. The relationship of the behavior of that printed textile to the geometry and material of the textile unit is also examined. If architects, designers and scientists developing textile technologies for buildings, clothing or other objects can begin to understand and digitally construct different categories of textile structures, as well as understand how the behavior of that textile relates to its structure, then they can better understand how to design form active systems, or structures that are able to move when required.

Contemporary cities scanned by GPS machines are continually redefined by collaborative comments. New kinds of games such as location-based games, urban hunting games and even alternate reality games show a different way of using and understanding the city. This article analyses these different interactive narratives of games that use the city as a platform for devices and applications sensitive to geographic location. The objective is to identify some of these practices that are appropriate to create applications for the dissemination of information about architecture and heritage, using buildings, events and places to enhance the knowledge about the city.

The form of the information is undergoing a process of intensification of development in relation to the area of production of teaching materials for distance learning (ODL), given the current development of new ways to motivate and establish the teachinglearning. This study aimed to identify a theoretical framework, based on the concept of learning objects, to analyze a process of information production of educational interest using the following parameters: granularity, reusability, interoperability and recoverability then deriving from the concept of objects learning.

The objective is to verify the cybernetic philosophy of Hishino city, outlined by Kisho Kurokawa. The Cybernetics of city planning comprehended it in a systemic form, preoccupied with the communication between the elements, valued the process and the whole. Kurokawa used entropy, unity, probability and multiplicity on the traffic system. The idea was that, in traffic, there were never more than two possible pathways. The area was elaborated in three districts, on loop, binary system and zones of linear services. The concept was based on a network system, which evoked the connotation between connected parts, with equal importance and balance.

This paper aims to discuss the possible contributions that parametric modeling environments can bring to descriptive geometry teaching process in architecture courses. The paper shows a method where models developed in Grasshopper are used to illustrate how is possible to combine computing concepts, shape generation and design references during descriptive geometry classes. In this work is used as design precedent, solutions created by the Mexican architect and mathematician Felix Candela. His concrete shells developed from hyperbolic paraboloids are recognized as important references in architecture. As was said, during the research was developed a set of models in Grasshopper. This models were created in a way to show to the students the concepts required to build an hyperbolic paraboloid.

Related to the very common use of contemporary evolutionary methodologies, metaphorical relations coming out between architectural design and different structures (open and closed) and also new forms of spatiality are now being discussed. We are trying in this research, to query such a relationship between design and poetic language. In this regard, this paper concerns how haiku, well-known Japanese poem, may turn out to be an unfolding layer within the act of designing, by standing as a sort of syntactic generator. Genetic algorithms are benefited to compute the existing formalism in haiku structure, which gives rise to "gradient spatiality".

This paper describes the initial results of a grammar study based on bottom-up research carried out in Campinas. The research covers self-built housing and "in situ" projects aimed at creating systems which will help the inhabitants by providing them with "layouts" for housing construction. This paper explores the descriptive and generative potential of shape grammar in order to create a parametric shape grammar for self-built incremental housing in Campinas, respecting tradition, diversity and the inhabitants' desires.

The goal of this project is a deeper understanding of the mechanisms that shape a city with a focus on pedestrian flow. Pedestrian flow reveals the use of space, the capacity and use of transportation and has an impact on the health of people. Movement patterns of pedestrians are a topic in many related fields like transportation planning, computer graphics and sociology. This project augments the simulation of pedestrian decision processes by taking into account the preferences for surrounding factors like additional points of interests and how pedestrians interact along their path with other pedestrians in a social manner. The goal of this project is to analyse urban planning configurations and to give designers and decision makers a tool to measure the amount of people walking and therefore define the health of a society, finding places of social interaction and improving social coherence in neighbourhoods.

This paper describes part of an undergoing research developed in Brazil, as part of the international project Digital Alberti, whose goal is to investigate the influence of Leon Battista Alberti's treatise De re aedificatoria in Portugal and its colonies from the XIV to the XVII centuries. In the present work the translation of some of the treatise´s rules into a geometric language are presented. These rules are related to the layout of plans for rectangular temples.

This article describes the class Alberti Digital taught at the Faculty of Architecture of the Technical University of Lisbon (FAUTL) and later in the Department of Architecture, University of Coimbra (Darq / UC), centered in interpretation and exploitation of Alberti`s treatise Da Arte Edificatoria where students had to develop a visual computer program with the algorithms present in the treatise to generate virtual and physical models using different digital fabrication techniques, allowing them to gain skills in the use of computational resources and knowledge of history and theory related with Renaissance architecture and the principles of Alberti in particular.

A study of inmotic buildings of mild weather was taken at the central zone of Argentina, with postocupation surveys. The aim of it was to determine the comfort reached and the relations between passive and active individual. Providing to the users the power to control the interior ambient, increasing visual and thermal comfort. It was searched the degree the users rather want to leace actions to automatism. We conclude that there is need for design to include graphics interfaces, user's needs and in consequence to define the interactions with this consideration.

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the relationship between the shape grammar process and brand identity, taking the user's perception in the creation of new products as the central core of the research. The latter is done in order to obtain several parameters that allow us to change the shape of the products and do not affect the acknowledgement of brand conductive concept. By reducing the amount of results of processes of design, the selection and evaluation process is improved. To conduct the research the bottles from the brand Next from Soprole S.A were selected as study case.

Creating architectural form requires much more than a moment of inspiration; it requires understanding form in its whole structure. In teaching architecture aiming for the architectural design a group of strategies is needed to prepare students for the creative process. In this process it begins with issues such as the geometry allows the students redeem their prior knowledge. This paper compares, in two different contexts of the initial stages of architectural teaching process, the results of activities of digital graphic representation of architectural structures. These activities are supported by the analysis of shape grammar in promoting the learning process in a comprehensive manner such as suggested by Wertheimer.

The seizure of the concept of fractal allows you to establish a theoretical framework for the promotion of dynamic processes of generation and transformation of form. From a didactic interest, we sought to identify and analyze a tool of automated generation of fractal forms could contribute significantly to lay users in programming, understanding the concept of fractal. Drawing on constructivist theories of learning / teaching aimed to observe the potential of this tool to effectively approach to such concepts. A systematic held in the form of concept maps, is constituted as a learning object for the subject in question.

This paper analyzes the theory of polycubes from the basic unit the cube, until the formation of more complex shapes, understanding the assembly and operation of polycube parts, is part of the use of theory in architectural projects, determining the cubic module (dimensions) and its combination aspect. Relates modulation with numerical series for the distribution and creation of environments. In the end establishes two design methodologies based on the theory, that it will work in a ludic way and culminate in housing prototypes.

The paper investigates strategies and procedures enabled by the generative modeling that can become more active user participation in the design process in architecture. With the participation of lay people in the architecture field and inspired by participatory design methods used in Europe in the 60s and 70s, was driving a process of defining guidelines for the occupation of an area based on productive cooperation and the free flow of information, seeking to explore the potential that new computational technologies can add to this approach between the user and the space to be built.

This paper evaluates the use of Scan-and-Solve plug-in for structural analysis in Rhinoceros's environment. A reception desk parametrically modeled was evaluated with Scan-and-Solve and with Ansys. From the results, we concluded that the main difference between the programs is that Ansys allows more detailed definition of the connections between parts of the object. Besides the virtual models, the results were showed with a physical model printed with the rapid prototypes techniques. The paper describes the integration of parametric modeling, structural analysis and rapid prototyping procedures in the design process.

This article discusses the relationship between instrumentation for the architectural design, in particular the teaching of drawing, and current conditions of representation, based on digital tools, specially with the use of softwares for Building Information Modeling (BIM). It presents the difficulties of teaching architectural design today and proposes an alternative comprehension of priorities, based on understanding of architectural elements as a reference for learning. After this, it discusses the potential of this technique for teaching construction of a more comprehensive way and presents a multimedia material for developing this task.

Seeking to investigate, in a preliminary way, the possibilities of applied research in architectural language through parametric software and rapid prototyping. A class of protozoa called radiolarian, class "Radiolaria" (HAECKEL, 2005), presents radial skeletons that form hexagonal patterns, enabling large-scale conceptual application. This article aims to promote the discussion about how the adoption of Building Information Modeling systems in management processes and three-dimensional geometric modeling can interfere in the design process and construction of complex shapes in architecture. To that end, we assembled a theoretical-practical referential about the use of non-Euclidean forms in contemporary architecture and BIM tools, illustrated with iconic design processes developed by Frank Gehry and Zaha Hadid. Finally, there was the importance of BIM tools to a new understanding of architecture, by enabling the construction of complex shapes.

The purpose of this paper is to analyse, through a case study, the teaching-learning practices in the design studio, establishing a parallel between the use of CAD (Computer-Aided Design) and BIM (Buiding Information Modelling) tools. It aims to comprehend how this transition unfolds and to identify their reflections on the graphical representation of architectural projects, based on the results of students' works and on the interview realized. The results confirm the transition context, by concomitant use of both softwares by many students, and bring into question the maintenance of products generated by new designing processes.

In the 60's and 70's, Christopher Alexander faced important architectural dilemmas and his various solutions became relevant theoretical references to contemporary debates. Reviewing his design theory between the synthesis of form and the pattern languages , this paper addresses the challenge of Alexander to establish a systemic conception of space that recognizes the interaction and complexity of human forces. At the end, it brings this spatial dilemna to the contemporary context, fostering new challenges to the computational architecture.

Building Information Modeling (BIM) has been considered as an emerging collaborative strategy since its introduction, meant for AEC industry and heading to benefits in terms of costs and design quality during the whole building lifecycle. BIM approach, originally developed for new projects, can be successfully applied to existing contexts using TLS surveys to collect point clouds and turn them later into smart digital models, taking advantage of new technologies and methods. This paper addresses these themes paying attention to issues and opportunities, considering BIM as a paramount tool to collect and manage data destined to multiple disciplines

The folded compositions in architecture enable creatively rethink the methods and instruments of ideation and manufacturing. Displace conventional architectural graphic (Descriptive Geometry and Perspective) of autonomy and historical determinism that has characterized (obsessive stylistic control of the design object and spatial structure inherited under the canons of classical geometry). The material expression of these settings provides an important link between: the formal conceptualization, the digital geometric operation, its manufacturing and responsive review, similar to the design process used. At the same time reveals limitations of scale, materiality and design limitations, which condition the models implemented.

This work was born from the need to have an objective way to analyze the movement of water drops deflected by a prototype mudguard. To satisfy this need, using computer vision appears as a possibility. This paper defines the parameters that a possible program should work on, and suggests an algorithm to treat the information in order to give a first step for its application.

Even though most studio courses, in architecture and design curricula in LA, use web resources, their role in learning is not always fully clear and deeper understanding is required. Due to a prevailing approach based on practical reasoning in the studio, learning is usually assessed by focusing on the representation of the design object, rather than on the cognitive process in design thinking. This research examines online asynchronous communication during a studio project, searching evidence of design knowledge-building through a Community of Inquiry framework. It intends to provide better understanding of how teaching may influence cognitive processes in students.

Modular Coordination and Building Information Modeling emerge as potential strategies to improve the AEC industry, considering that both enhance the integration and communication among the different professionals involved in the project. This study aims to investigate the association between BIM and Modular Coordination, through the development of an application with demonstration purposes and the registration of its methodology. The paper presents how the process of customizing a BIM application was developed and its result: a plug-in designed to automatically generate the layout of ceramic bricks for rationalized masonry, plus the extraction of 2D technical drawings and quantitative lists.

In the time since European architects first began using computers in the building design process, the digital revolution has transformed how architects use planning tools completely. Today, digital tools are an indispensable part of planning practice. Besides a wide variety of digital modeling tools, parametric tools offer architects diverse options for generating cybernetic building models as BIM-models or homeostatic parametric geometry models. Cybernetic models help us to describe the buildings as a system and can improve planning efficiency. The aim of planning is to construct or fabricate an end result. The integration of digital fabrication methods in the digital chain is a fundamental goal if architects are to benefit from the progressive development of computer controlled machine tools. Fabrication integrated digital models can automate the planning process up to the production stage and enable the efficient fabrication of building components. The increased efficiency of planning and fabrication has facilitated a growing proliferation of buildings of increasing geometric complexity. Computers can open a door to the realization of new forms, spaces and construction systems to architects that understand the principles of fabrication-integrated cybernetic modeling.

This paper treats the technology to generate point clouds from photographs, more known as Dense Stereo Matching (DSM) or Structure from Motion (SfM), among other terminologies. The article presents the concepts, basic principles and architectural survey phases with DSM: planning, data acquisition, processing and post-processing to obtain other products from point cloud data. Then, we present several existing software for DSM, classified in three categories: web-based tools, free software/opensource and commercial software. Finally, we discuss the potentialities of this new technologies for architectural documentation and compare DSM with 3D laser scanning.

Access to data capable of describing existing territorial dynamics is an indispensable condition to elaborate effective urban regulations, notwithstanding current difficulties to get reliable sources of information. Such difficulties are related to several factors. In terms of the technical obstacles, occasions where the data arrangement obstructs a sufficient cognition level by the user are recurrent. Information Design has helped to overcome such obstacles by using Geographic Information Systems. The article uses such techniques to adapt land prices data in Fortaleza in order to analyze the behavior of real estate market after the approval of a restrictive zoning regulation (ZEIS).

The research paper outlines the novel design methodology undertaken to redesign an existing apartment building in Kolkata India. The aim of the research is to significantly improve the design of the individual apartments as well as their spatial arrangement to enhance the indoor comfort level experienced by the inhabitants. The initial in-depth study of the existing design of the apartment building encompasses a short survey of the comfort level experienced by its inhabitants in terms of day lighting, natural ventilation and thermal comfort. The survey revealed the way in which these issues affected the behavioral pattern of the inhabitants in rearranging their spatial needs for the given design conditions. Consequently, the endeavor proposed promised to significantly improve the aforesaid areas of problem & discomfort for the building occupants. At the same time, exploiting contemporary computational simulation tools and digital three-dimensional modeling techniques the project leverages the same to prove the improvements proposed by research data in the form of scientific & mathematical tables and values.

Digital sound reproduction is inferior to analog sound reproduction: by definition digitally processed sound is a compressed representation of the original sound signal. Similarly, this paper asks: Are digital computation design tools inferior to analog tools? Is information missing from the digital design "signals"? What is analog computation and could new tools be developed that avoid digital compression, and allow designers to more clearly "hear" or experience the act of design? Working within our current digital computation paradigm, we argue designers are underexposed to and even unaware of much of the raw design signal available with analog computation design tools.

It exposes a design and construction system for horizontal plates to work as slabs in regular concrete buildings. Based to an evolutionary finite-element analysis of the topological configuration to get a curved design with a 50% reduction of traditional volume, that provide lower cost, less carbon foot-print, better performance and innovative ceiling. A library of profiles is elaborated according different loads, support and dimensions and implemented in a parametric design system, in order to produce geometries for study theirs integration in the building and to elaborate digital fabrication files. Different constructive strategies are been studied, making several prototypes.

The present work is offers the project of an online resource for investigating the actual Brazilian academic panorama concerning CAAD education. The access to this information is given through the development of a website, which introduces the visitors to the actual Brazilian CAAD education situation, offers a questionnaire, accessible by everyone and builds up a visual information mapping the current state of CAAD education in the different regions of Brazil. The questionnaire is 14 questions long and its link has been sent via email to the addresses of the Brazilian faculties of architecture, being re-directed equally both to its students' committees and courses' coordinators. The objective is that, at its conclusion, the access to this information will lead to a better understanding of the CAAD education in Brazil. It can motivate discussions about curricula and CAAD's pedagogy. Through the analysis of its visualizations, maps, tables and statistics, it points special features in Brazilian education system, as well as give directions for further researches and pedagogic proposals.

It is intended to identify how these drawings, using tablets, keep the perception and the personal dash of each one. The first research, done in 2011, indicated possibilities of interface with CAD, Revit and Sketch-up. This paper shows an experience where digital technologies are used in architecture and product design processes aiming collaboration, manufacturing and construction of urban equipments for a group of 210 households. The project is covered by a Federal Government Program called “My home My Life – Entities” which provides the community resources through a Neighborhood Association that will manage the projects. This article proposes a link that points out to the concept of Triple Helix, which involves the participation of a private enterprise and university in the process of promoting social-economic development. The project included a group of architects working with digital fabrication, design, design process and validation of an urban equipment that will be proposed to be inserted in this new community.

Based on case studies on performative design (generative performative design) in outstanding international architectural studios, this paper presents and discusses an important revealed characteristic of digital design in the observed practice. This feature is the coexistence of performative design with other digital design models, within the design process. From these considerations it is shown that this coexistence allows establishing conjectures about the digital design practices and highlights the importance of learning multiples digital design methods and techniques, which are essential to the digital design practice of some complex buildings.

The goal is to re-set patterns and strategies of design with DT from plural perspectives and poly-temporal creations, all of it inserted in a complex ethical point of view of a contemporary design. This paper describes a design experiment with the use of Voronoi Diagrams, a systematic division of the metric space based on a set of points. Automated procedures were used in the process: a script that generated sets of random points and a plug in that automatically generated polygons based on these points. Computer models, scale models and full scale prototypes were produced in order to develop construction details and preview results. It was possible to conclude that the use of a generative method along with automated procedures is far from restricting creativity, allowing the quick exploration of multiple design alternatives.

The intention of this paper is to discuss the effort to spread knowledge and technology to a group of people (teachers, students and professionals), who would probably take much longer to have the chance to use new technologies as a design tool. Connecting two events called Road Show and Workshop, the paper shows the methods, processes and solutions achieved throughout different activities and its effects on the use of Digital fabrication and rapid prototyping as a design and materialization tools. In such case, it is a good example on how to spread the news and provide a starting point to make people more aware and train them to become future users of these technologies. The materialization of the results are shown.

This article describes the process of theoretical and practical Fab Lab Kids Project in Brazil and in more detail the "Fab Lab Kids: Workshop environmental projects for public school children through manufacturing and digital electronics", the most recent edition of this project, which consists conducting an experimental workshop with students from public school in the city of Guarulhos, São Paulo. Through the concept of learning by doing, children are exposed to the possibility of acting on the environment and the objects surrounding them, proposing objects that might solve socio-environmental issues, which are produced via electronics and digital fabrication.

Digital manufacturing in both as art and technology is a new way of designing, re-creation and re-invention of reality. This paper considers, from an epistemological point of view, the process of digital fabrication and its hyperlinks to known and simulated reality, and its ontological nature. Through documentation and methodological approach to the construction of a Moebius strip, this paper analyzes the nature and specifications of digital manufacturing. For this purpose, it makes a study of some strip properties and establishes a correlation within digital manufacturing, emphasizing similarities, complexities and shared qualities. Thus, it aims to create a reflection and a critical perspective on the complex logic of creation and simulation of knowable reality. And also it contributes to explore a theoretical corpus on the role of architects and designers in this incipient and ongoing discipline.

This article reports the experience of creating a support application for designing kinetic facades. The tool´s goal is the creation of a visual simulation system that permits full control over the movement of geometric patterns. In this case, we try to control the variation of polarized glasses used on architectural facades. The study presents a modeling technique of geometrical grids created and controlled by modular arithmetic operations. The programmed algorithm allows performing periodic geometric patterns. The research is aimed at formalizing a library of patterns and types of possible movements through ratings and an abstract symbolic representation.

The objective of the present paper is to propose a design solution database to help students learn basic landscape design concepts and help them apply this new knowledge by using examples developed by an experienced designer. The system is based on an ontology that contains classes of design concepts and design instances. Beyond the structure to search for design concepts and precedents, it’s also proposed an interactive module implemented in a parametric design tool. This module allows students generate and insert automatically different parametric components, such as a group of trees, bushes, sculptures, in a digital model. The system efficacy was verified in a workshop performed with undergraduate students.

Ordinarily, high-speed train design methodology has been modeled to guide designer's problem solving and design thinking. However, the current methodology cannot guide designers in very detail due to the reason of the difficulties in bridging gap between pure engineering-knowledge and design-knowledge. In other words, these two knowledge are disconnected each other in a whole frame of design process. But, the paradigm shift that was induced by biomimetic approach has demanded an interdisciplinary approach for a generation of new geometrical characteristics that were impossible to be handled in the current design methodology. In this research, as a case study, we quantify the front-head design of high-speed trains to check the impacts of biomimetic approach. Quantitative methodology of the landmark based morphometric design analysis is introduced and adapted on the study.

This paper focuses on the applications of geometrically transformable and expandable structures with deployed "energy production mode" and "retracted wind shedding" mode to replace the fixed photovoltaic (PV) panels and racking systems currently used in buildings rooftop installations. The significance of this expandable geometric system relies on its embedded motion grammar, i.e. rotation and translation transformations, in the system. The research draws inspiration from reconfiguration of compound tree leaves in nature, and addresses issues of redesign and modeling challenges that led to digital fabrication of the prototype.

With the adequate methodology and teacher support, it is possible to guide these skills, innate in students, and get an effective collaborative work in developing the project. Through this research, applied to students of architecture, schemes are proposed to improve the teaching-learning process, and extend beyond the classroom.

This paper aims to contribute to the discussion and our understanding of time-based mapping of visual information. Our approach is to enhance the traditional contextual static analysis through the acknowledgement of the body and the senses as key indicators of perceptual spatial experience. The time-based mapping paradigms have produced different ways of designing space by leveraging perceptual and other sensorial understanding, leading to the formation of variables (or parameters) which at the same time turn themselves as catalysts for other variables. The potential for a constantly evolving reinterpretation of the perceptual experience and for associated paradigm to shift suggest a multiplicity of design possibilities for urban areas that also need to adapt to the new requirements of contemporary living. In essence, the paper will bring to light the deployment of tools (digital and analogue) to turn static invisible data to dynamic visible data. In other words, we want to explore how the data can be treated as a generative system, enabling students and tutors alike to experience space which accounts for sensory performances and behaviours within the space.

Furthermore, the employment of digital technology offers a great advance in the field of cultural good's documentation by including not only tangible issues but also iconographic elements, materials information and constructive pathology survey, to mention a few. This kind of models had become an open documentary system, and they should be considered essential in every architectural heritage conservation´s project.

We present an evaluation model to analyze ambient information systems, based on attentional mechanisms. Taking Weiser and Brown (1996) concepts of Ubiquitous Computing and Calm Technology as a starting point, we delimit ambient information systems as those that can be monitored without requiring the focus of our attention. Using the theoretical framework from Cognitive Psychology, we propose an evaluation model to analyze ambient information systems, considering the attentional mechanisms involved in their use. As a conclusion, we outline a set of parameters to be considered during the design of ambient information systems.

It was proposed to develop a prototype of urban roadside, with domotic technology, that is sustainable and that attends the needs of all kind of users, from childs to elders to disabled people. This paper describes a design experiment of a reception desk. Automated procedures were used in the process: a parametric design generated the form and connections. Computer models and physical prototypes were produced in order to develop construction details and preview results. We compared this exercise with the method used to design Aviva Stadium in Dublin. It was possible to conclude that the use of a generative method along with automated procedures did not restrict creativity, allowing the quick exploration of multiple design alternatives.

This paper investigates the relation between the shading condition and geometrical configuration of neighborhood-scale developments. It introduces a straightforward method for measuring shadow areas casted on buildings' roofs and facades in urban areas using digital 3D models. Employing this method for measuring shadow areas in nine neighborhoods in Jinan, China, at six different time points on summer and winter solstices. A total of 54 sample measurements, this study develops two regression models that reveal the significant dependency of the in-shadow percentage of buildings' façade and roof areas to the building volume density (BVD) and height irregularity (HI) of the urban fabric.

The aim of this article is to introduce the main concepts of evolutionary algorithm and to explain its structure. Knowledge of geometric drawing, hitherto considered previous in the training context in architecture, has little emphasis in the school curriculum. This paper reports on the initial findings of an Undergraduate Research on Social Housing Program implemented in the city of Limeira, making use of a Building Information Modeling platform as a methodological procedure. A virtual information model of Housing Units and Housing Complex was created, and represents their real physical building components. The initial results portray BIM as especially useful to Civil Construction students, as fostering an integral environment where students are readily enabled to synthesize the knowledge of the art of construction.

This work describes a methodology to optimize solar incidence in photovoltaic facades of multi-floor buildings. The methodology identifies and parameterizes the building volume according to geometric principles of photovoltaic capture for all facades orientations. Initially, geometric modeling is made through an algorithm developed in a graphic-algorithm editor, Grasshopper - integrated with the modeling tool, Rhinoceros - then establishing the shape restrictions and variables. Secondly, twist and taper geometric transformation is correlated with solar incidence data through the interface of genetic platform, Galapagos. The results indicate that it's possible explore the method to obtain: optimal solutions, reduced design time and better energy performance.

Nat-Vent is a modeling system to parametrically simulate natural ventilation of buildings in early stages of design. The Nat-Vent approach comprehends a set of architecture design tools that were connected to an equation solver through a Model Based System Engineering tool (SysML). SysML, which is a general purpose modeling language for systems engineering, is able to mathematically interoperate between architects and engineers while keeping model consistency between them. This implementation enhances the architectural side of design by offering a simple ventilation tool that can be used by architects and engineers, and also delivers geometric feedback from ventilation performance-based decisions.

The term is widely used in the context of stem cells in biological science where pluripotency is referred to the potential of a stem cell to develop into more than one type of mature cell, depending on environment. These can be re-interpreted architecturally as, the quality of design components or elements to be radically transformed into one or more different kinds of components, keeping the general structural integrity of the design unchanged (Kolatan, 2009). Among the context information used, we highlight tourists' profiles, their needs and restrictions. We developed a general model of an Electronic Tourist Guide and a specific prototype for the Caminhos de Pedra itinerary, a touristic region in the city of Bento Gonçalves in the Rio Grande do Sul state.

Assuming that the city is not an accomplished system, but a living body, in constant development, this study proposes a Grasshopper generative algorithm, which aims to interpret the favelas' dynamics forces, responsible for these spaces continuous transformations. The generative process so defined is an open project, where the inhabitants are free to adapt the house, along the time, to their specific space demand, even respecting some assembling rules and constructive principles. The final result is a social dwelling construction process where flexibility and adaptability are integrated into the project, and where the variable time accomplish an important role into space configuration.

The proposed matrix facilitates the exchange of dimensions involved in the project operation, handling our own digital culture and constituting a procedural input which enables non-lineal access to the issues raised in a cartographical approach.

This study examines how digital design and manufacturing technologies are redefining what is considered technically feasible to build in architecture. Six case studies are examined using the Buildability Model proposed in the literature. Results show that buildability factors remain essentially unchanged and should only be deepened or expanded in scope. The results, however, suggest that buildability principles are very questionable, and therefore, they must be reformulated. Additionally, the impact of these results on architectural education curricula is discussed.

This paper describes two case studies in which digital media and morphology are closely related. The first one refers to the evolution of the different instruments applied in a research area comprising spatial surfaces generated by double rotation. It presents the latest results in the development of joint design for this kind of products. Finally, the current trends in our research are briefly mentioned.

In contemporary architecture there is a growing interest in exploring unique forms and constructive solutions, which could hardly be conceived and materialized until recently. In this second scenario, given that the use of CAD/CAM technologies have opened new possibilities for traditional materials, it becomes important to ask if cork could face similar innovative opportunities. The present paper synthesizes some of the main arguments, experiments and results obtained in a PhD thesis about that question.

The experiment consisted in using a modeling software to create one object using several different techniques, to analyze the number of polygons, the behavior of the surface normals, the stability of the geometries and collision behavior for each one of the objects, in the digital environment.

Differently from other regions in the Planet, since 2010, in Latin America textual programming language (Rhinoscripting) is being replaced by its visual equivalent (Grasshopper). This is a consequence of our preference for an interactive platform, and because our design problems are not as complex, so we aim to control geometrical problems or aspects belonging to an product scale instead of an architectural one. Problems emerging when creating code could be improved by modifying and reusing existing solutions as a starting point, since learning would not be centered in the object but in the process of creating it, using a suitable instrument.

Over the last decade digital tools became an integral part in architectural design practice and teaching. A variety of software and algorithmic methods enhance our possibilities in advanced building design. Yet our build environment is perceived with our body and senses. In this paper I present an information visualization course, which gives students an analysis method to interlace and understand the complex relationship between physical phenomena and qualitative evaluation of space. The tools and methods to achieve this aim were a combination of sensor technologies, algorithmic data visualization and phenomenological inquiry. A detailed description of the course objective, methodologies and students work are provided in this paper.

As a consequence of the emergence of models based on the notions of disequilibrium and uncertainty, cities have being seen as intrinsically complex nonlinear systems subject to sociospatial changes that occur, simutaneously, in many scales. The present paper analyzes three models to simulate urban segregation dynamics. Schelling's model shows how can emerge unexpected highly segregated global patterns from local preferences to live close to each other. Epstein and Axtell's model reveals its pedagogic role through the manipulation of specific parameters. Portugali's model emphasizes the cognition and learning capabilities of agents to recognize patterns and change their behaviour accordingly.

These examples include representatives of the Luso-Brazilian architecture, eclectic, transitional eclectic and pre-modern architecture. The representation of these examples has documented and valued such heritage, subsidizing the cultural memory of the city. The production system is a supportive process of teaching, research and extension, committed to the various possibilities for applying these representations and the evolution of the technological resources available.

This paper will discuss how Shoowa Kuba textiles could be analyzed as an ornament that can be digitally constructed and applied in design. An historical outline of ornament is provided by briefly comparing Classical and Gothic ornaments. This theoretical framework is then compared to the art of Shoowa Kuba focusing on their textile embroideries. Various patterns and techniques will be introduced showing how Kuba people implement rules as well as how they break them. These patterns will be digitally reconstructed to show their applicability to the digital design domain.

This paper presents the results of an exploratory study developed with the Autodesk Project Vasari and AutoCAD Civil 3D. Project Vasari was used to evaluate the environmental performance of a low-income housing project. It shows us that the actual site orientation of the project presents poor environmental performance, which could be improved by rotating building in 90 degrees. The AutoCAD Civil 3D was used to evaluate how that rotation should impact on earthmoving. The results showed that the simulations developed, even though having low level of accuracy, provide sufficiently clear information to support decision making on conceptual mass project stage.

This paper investigates the Design domain especially on information visualization production to digital media through journalism, focusing on images’ visual rhetoric and aiming at contributing to an initial global debate in view of the contemporary technologic scenario characterized by multimediality and growing popularity of interactive, portable computational devices. For that, it presents the transition between old and new media, the impact on journalism and on information visualization production by new media. It proposes a conscious and organized use of visual rhetoric for designers, with a taxonomy based on earlier researches, and analyses some case studies of information visualization produced by Brazilian and international media companies.

This paper presents a developed web-based information system using the data collected during underwater surveys conducted on the coastal region of Turkey. Divers from a variety of professional backgrounds collected data by keeping the archaeological artifacts in their original context. By collecting visual, geographical and descriptive data using structured datasheets, the artifacts are transferred into the digital domain. Through the analysis of these methods, an information system is developed aiming for the contribution of all interested parties in a collaborative manner. Combined with Google Maps, the database illustrates the initial technological steps towards the development of a virtual museum.
