This project involves the creation of an architecture of music which may be defined as a series of interdisciplinary steps which seek to generate four-dimensional virtual spaces for the materialization of music. This materialization uses music as its .genetic information ., the virtual space as its medium, and the execution time of the musical piece as the fourth dimension to a three-dimensional virtual space. Within this space, each instrument.s execution is represented by a shape whose properties undergo changes resulting from the musical information. Through the use of new Virtual Reality techniques, we will soon have the possibility to be inside the music, as a habitable place. The achievement of this project is to provide the opportunity to experience this representation through virtual animation.

"A Referential Picture for the Analysis of Webpages: a study of the Disfigurements Carried out by Brazilian Hackers." In Proceedings of the 8th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics. SIGraDi. São Leopoldo, Brasil: Universidade do Vale do Rio dos Sinos, 2004. The present study tries to investigate the Brazilian hackers´ artistic and communicational manifestations. We tried to understand how they use the digital technology for expression of their identities and transmission of messages in defaced homepages. The integration of different chains of thinking made it possible to build a schematic diagram and the establishment of conceptual categories for a graphic analysis and for the analysis of the messages present in the defacements by the Brazilian hackers. From these analyses we could see that the Brazilian hackers express their identities through their nicknames and defaced pages. These pages have a common underlying structure marked by the linearity, the identification of the one(s) responsible for the defacement, the message left for the administrator of the defaced page, the personal statements and the exhibition of the elements for contact with the defacer(s).
"A semantic indexation method to assist with the architectural design process by images." In Proceedings of the 8th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics. SIGraDi. A lot of research shown that designing an architectural solution requires introducing external references other than those existing in the design problem. In our case we choose photographic images to illustrate these references because an image illustrates the graphic part of an architectural concept. For this the information transmitted by photographic image is often easier to interpret by the designer. To assist the design process, we are working on the construction of a reference image database where the designer will find various solutions to his design problem. We have therefore proposed a method for indexing this image database. The following paper tackles the particular question of semantic meaning applied to architectural works. More precisely, we present the results obtained through an experiment following the Chi-square statistic rule, whose objective was to validate the weight associated with the architectural concepts illustrated according to their visual features in images.

Little attention has been paid to methods for providing schoolbooks in hypertext environment, though. The objective of this research was to develop propositions of methods and tools specifically for presenting textbook in interactive digital environments, paying attention to the characteristics and demands of contemporary youth and the characteristics and potentialities of hypertext systems, specially its associative quality, similar to those of the human mind. The theory on which this article is based is brought by David Ausubel.s cognitive pedagogy and its similarity to web systems, especially those which are hypertext based.

This paper is concerned with the use of real-time camera engines in architectural virtual environments as a method of enhancing the user.s experience and as a way of facilitating the understanding of architectural concepts. This paper reports on an initial prototype of a real-time cinematic control camera engine for dynamic virtual environments in the architectural domain. The paper discusses the potential of the system to convey architectural concepts using well known architectural concepts such as rhythm and proposes a series of future improvements to address those limitations. "An Experience Evaluation: Between Representation and Reality." In Proceedings of the 8th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics. SIGraDi. This article is about an experience in the course of .Informática Aplicada à Arquitetura. for architecture students, at the Universidade Estadual de Londrina, applied on the the 2nd year, in a period between 1998 to 2003. We present an evaluation of three moments of this experience, thinking of the representation, the use of images and the easy way of constructing digital objects. The intentions were integrate theoretical knowledge on the space and digital three-dimensional exercises. From all experinces, all the process, exercises and their results we can stand out two reflections: the danger of the image used as a discard object and the construction of forms without conscience.
"An experience on supporting the learning of technical graphics and improving visualization." In Proceedings of the 8th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics. SIGraDi. This paper presents an experience of applying computer graphics, virtual reality and Internet resources in the teaching of technical graphics in engineering and design courses at the University of Brasilia, Brazil. Our motivation was the fact that most of the students have a lack of previous knowledge on the basis of drawings, resulting difficulties in both understanding and visualizing technical drawings. As an experimental method, we introduced VRML 3D modeling in addition to CAD and regular pencil-and-paper drawings study and practice. To better support learning, we first provided a website with animations and virtual reality resources, avoiding the usual textbook metaphor. Since 2003 we are providing a CD-ROM containing all the former website material which is updated each semester. This experience is intended to improve the learning in a way that motivates the students. Classes, website and CD-ROM material was conceived to take advantage of computers´ interactivity and animated resources.
"An object oriented approach to simulating agent-based behavior." In Proceedings of the 8th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics. SIGraDi. São Leopoldo, Brasil: Universidade do Vale do Rio dos Sinos, 2004. In this paper, we present an object-oriented approach for simulating agent-based egress behavior. The tool can be used when planners or designers need to assess the implications of their design or planning decisions. The tool is a web-based application that is being developed using standard protocols and technologies such as HTTP, HTML, and Java. It also demonstrates the effect of new building designs by simulating human evacuation behavior and relates the behavior of people. The existing models to describe the behavior of crowds usually deal with macroscopic variables like the average speed or the flow. Our aim is to model crowds as a malleable, moving masses, hoping that a more refined simulation might be achieved by considering each avatars behavior.
"Analogue + Digital: Model of Digital Systems Integration in the Creative Design Process." In Proceedings of the 8th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics. SIGraDi. Our research objective is searching for a model of an projection process that appropriately involves digital systems and analog proceedings of Industrial Design projection by taking advantage of each medium. Aim is to amplify projection abilities of students by increasing their expressive and cognitive possibilities. For this reason, we have finished an experimentation within a class of digital graphics. We have found that analog means are a motivation in learning with digital tools, assuming that the technique is guided by the concept already defined by means of software experimentation. In addition, we have concluded that students learned more dynamic, because it was focused to practice and not to pure theory, which can be easily forgotten by students.

This activity is done using collaborative systems to exchange the data of the projects with the people being in different places and in a different time. For the improvement of these collaborative enviroments and for the conception of new systems it is necessary the investigation of what happens in the collaboration among the professionals. This article presents a proposal of analysis of the architectural formal production accomplished in computing environment, putting emphasis on the most recent experimental production found in specialized publications. This analysis shows how the introduction of the computing tools may interfere with the design process, mainly when it is the production of complex forms, non-conventional. Thus, besides the recent architectural production of several offices and / or architecture companies of international renown, architectural experiences which have been developed by architects since the introduction of the CAD systems in there production are also presented Next, it presents the possibilities of the three-dimensional modeling, by making an analysis of the current possibilities, the geometric and the procedural ones, putting enphasis on the modeling of splines, NURBS and metaballs, which proved to be appropriate for the architectural production of complex forms.

This paper describes experimental work carried out in a special architectural design studio. It runs methods that are different of the traditional teaching in the .normal. studios. The entire working time is separated in two characteristic periods: .Creative tasks. and .Design tasks.. The purpose is to clarify the design process assuming that generating ideas has quite different characteristics than leading them to the real world. Creative work means imagination whose limits are difficult to establish. In fact imagination hates imposed limits. Conversely the final task of design is to determine limits. These two opposed forces are conciliated in the design process. Ideas as well as physical objects need special means of representation. In the process of contemporary architectural design there is a privileging of measured visual information over other forms of representation as primary vehicles for the construction and construing of meaningful human experience. Within our contemporary cultural context there are other forms of cultural production that have not privileged such empirical models and as such have been utilized to establish an alternate aesthetic, for the purposes of construing meaning, that is entirely contrary to the modernist aesthetic ideal. This paper will focus on one form of alternate cultural production, namely the dialogic, and in so doing will identify how it informs possibilities for the thinking and making of architecture.

The purpose of the present study is to examine the future of teaching of architecture and urbanism given to the knowledge-society that asks for changes and demands reflex ion over the possibilities of a new pedagogy to create new possibilities of social inclusion in knowledge over spatial processes. The present study proposes to examine the specifics of new technologies, the transformations of the pedagogic order into new forms of decoupages of objects of knowledge of production of contents of learning, of availability of knowledge and of the democratization of accessibility. The debate over the transformation of information in knowledge by the utilization of digital techniques is open and we find positions in favor and against. Teaching by technological methods is a reality that must be established with intensity in the future, given production costs and the potentiality of education for all, the challenge is to establish new channels of dialogue between the university and the society.

"Art: a Provoking Agent in the Architecture-Digital Technology relationship." In Proceedings of the 8th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics. SIGraDi. São Leopoldo, Brasil: Universidade do Vale do Rio dos Sinos, 2004. This article investigate the interplay of digital technology, art and architecture and it presents a series of experimental actions developed at LAGEAR (Graphical Lab for the Experience of Architecture at the School of Architecture of the Federal University of Minas Gerais, Brazil). These experimental actions aimed the inclusion of an artistic approach in the daily life of a computer lab dedicated to teaching and researching architectural matters. At first it is presented a discussion on the relation of art and architecture followed by an analisis of the enhancement of the such relationship with the advent of digital technology. Then, it is described a series of works developed by artists and researchers working together to create a specific piece of art. The article concludes with a systematization and further discussion on the new possibilities that came about with the intertwining of art, architecture and digital technology.
"Artificial intelligence and emergence in architecture: a multi-agent based model for design processes." In Proceedings of the 8th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics. SIGraDi. São Leopoldo, Brasil: Universidade do Vale do Rio dos Sinos, 2004. The purpose of this paper is to provide an alternative approach to traditional design process formulation and elaboration. In contrast to traditional models of design process fundamentally defined by the abstract manipulation of objects, this study recognizes that the resources available for rethinking architecture are to be found in a reformulation of its theory and practice. This reformulation should be based on non-linear design processes in which dynamic emergence and invention take the place of a linear design process fixed on a particular object evolution. Design is possible to be defined in two different and commonly confused ways; one as the process of designing or design activity and the second as the product of designing. In this study, we are concerned with design as a process to emphasize the misconceptions, derived from studying design products solely. Therefore, we propose a change from a design knowledge based on objects to a one focused on design as a network of processes.
"Automation Project of Structural Calculations for CAD Programs - Use of Digital Tools for Structural Calculations in the School of Architecture." This paper describes the implementation of Automated Structural Calculations For CAD Programs. We aim to develop a newly conceived software prioritizing the analysis and structural design in the conceptual aspect, linking the calculation with the usual graphic procedures by means of a specific application for local education methodology, that will be intellectual property of our University. It refers the methodology applied in the implementation of the program and the pedagogical aspect we considered. The software is developped as a macro programmed in open source code (Visual Basic Application) with data-input and data output generated in AutoCAD 2000. The specific objectives are: to obtain significant improvements in the habitual resolution standards of complex exercises, to obtain suitable software with free distribution for academic purposes with minimum costs and develop an adequate instrument to the specific architects . work modality in our faculty.

The course Alternatives of Design is part of an integral viewpoint that aims to prepare architects from the Master Studies Department in Computing in Architecture (LUZ), in two ways: first, by expanding their perspective about potentialities of using new digital technologies in architecture, and second, by qualifying them to apply this acquired theoretical knowledge in their professional environment. The objectives of this paper are to describe the program of this course and to show products (2003), from the introductory to the final presentation of Virtual Museums of Interactive Sculptures, orientated and supervised both at site and at a distance through the Internet. As a result of this experience, a sample was obtained of virtual museums. design and modelling that illustrates what could be understood as virtual architecture with high degree of interaction, looking for the evolution, motivation and teamwork to incorporate virtual reality non-inmersive technologies in this new architectonic approach.
"Between Béziers and Nurbs: Teaching Free Forms in an Architectural Context." In Proceedings of the 8th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics. SIGraDi. São Leopoldo, Brasil: Universidade do Vale do Rio dos Sinos, 2004. This work intends to contribute to the use of techniques to represent free forms in didactic activities. It enlarges a previous study using only one technique to represent parametric curves and surfaces. It includes the NURBS technique, without discharging the BEZIER technique used before. Some exercises were structured using both techniques to model a representative example of Architecture: the Ronchamp Chapel . architect Le Corbusier. The tasks were compared to highlight the knowledge elements existing in both activities and its necessity of enlargement to move from one to another. Its is observed that the use of different techniques, as NURBS and Bezier, emphasize the specific characteristics of the geometric entities, establishing the control of parameters for free forms in the context of architectural graphics.

"Cityzoom - a tool for the visualization of the impact of urban regulations." In Proceedings of the 8th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics. SIGraDi. São Leopoldo, Brasil: Universidade do Vale do Rio dos Sinos, 2004. Visualization has been used for many years as an important way of presenting architectural design and projects. However, beyond design, planning urban areas requires the analysis of different factors. Urban regulations are planning tools used to control and/or stimulate changes in the urban structure and to reproduce a certain level of quality of the urban milieu. Land area, built area, plot rate, average building height, and other important attributes can be easily obtained from the geometric objects in the city model or explicitly associated to them. This paper presents a system, CityZoom, which integrates several performance tools that allow the simulation of different attributes related to a planned or existing city. These attributes are shown in different ways either as tables of attribute values estimated from model evaluation, or 3D scenarios where the user can navigate and observe realistic shadows and daylighting estimation based on the concept of solar envelope.
"Collaborative design: a french/tha௠experiment of co-design." In Proceedings of the 8th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics. SIGraDi. São Leopoldo, Brasil: Universidade do Vale do Rio dos Sinos, 2004. This communication describes an experimentation of co-design carried out between two teams of French and Thai nationalities. The objective of this collaboration is to design an exhibition of work from CRAI at the Art Gallery of Rangsit University (Thailand). We describe here the setting up of this collaboration (objectives, stakes) as well as its progress. This project enables us to apprehend the cooperative dimension of a design project, and particularly its sociological aspects. We describe also the tools implemented to assist the collaborative activities (discussions, file sharing, etc.). The characteristic of our experiment is the geographical and cultural distance of our two teams. The difficulties related to this distance enabled us to see how the tools can assist the actors in their co-operative tasks.
"Computer-supported Building Surveying - the Basis for Planning in Existing Built Contexts." In Proceedings of the 8th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics. SIGraDi. In view of declining populations and adequate housing provision in the western world, building in existing built contexts is becoming increasingly relevant. The conservation and use of existing buildings stock is not only ecologically sound but also an economic imperative. A prerequisite for computer-aided planning for existing buildings is both the use of on-site computer-aided surveying and the integration of all participants and disciplines in the planning process using integrated information and communication systems. The aim of this research project is twofold: to design a practice-relevant software concept for the support of the entire building surveying process embedded in the planning process, and to develop a practice-oriented mobile, digitally supported equipment and system environment for the digital architectural surveying of buildings. This paper will discuss the IT concept of a building surveying system, the software and hardware prototypes developed as well as usability aspects of wearable computers.

CUMINCAD (CUMulative INdex of papers on CAD) was created in 1998 and since then hundreds of users working in the field of CAAD have been taken advantage of this Digital Library. The number of recorded entries is currently over 6.600, from which a substantial part also provide a full paper in PDF-format. The effort is part of a portal solution: for example CUMINCAD archives English CAAD-related publications; CUMINCAD.ES focuses on publications in Spanish. A search in these Digital Libraries is as simple as in Google, but with the help of the following instructions, more valuable information could potentially be retrieved and this defines the goal of this paper. In other words: How to get more out of CUMINCAD and CUMINCAD.ES?

Design is a discipline which not only generates material realities but also fulfils a communicative function. It creates something new as well as makes objects visible and intelligible and facilitates the communication process through the messages these new objects contains. The incorporation of new technologies has generated the dematerialization of high technological developed objects, understanding this concept as the lose of the value they have. Because of the miniaturization, their materiality cost is lower in contraposition to the big technological load they have, producing new communication criteria between these objects and the user. The general objective of this investigation is to decipher the language used by these new objects to communicate and understand the reading of a great quantity of information through a decreasing materiality.
"Design Alternatives: Virtual Museums of Interactive Sculptures." In Proceedings of the 8th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics. SIGraDi. São Leopoldo, Brasil: Universidade do Vale do Rio dos Sinos, 2004. This article intends to discuss the application of Digital Interactive Panoramas within an academic research environment. The construction of the hyperdocument interface is critical to the process of demonstrating the actual experience in buildings or urban spaces. We assume that Digital Interactive Panoramas can bring significant contributions to architectural teaching, through an interactive interpretation of implicit and explicit information within the virtual space. Several techniques were applied in the interactive panoramas development in order to facilitate the learning experience and the essence understanding of the architectural object. Therefore, the user interaction with the interface provides meaningful possibilities, particularly if compared to traditional representation methods.

São Leopoldo, Brasil: Universidade do Vale do Rio dos Sinos, 2004. The media revolution which in many ways characterizes the 20th century has had a deep impact on architectural thinking. There are several possibilities to the translation of the current Age of Information into built matter, and those which we believe to be the most important ones are the object of this study. The pop attitude of expendable architecture is the first manifestation of such media-oriented architecture, followed by the .deconstructivism. of sight and space. In a more dramatic transformation, we see the assimilation of the digital adding interactivity and mobility to the built environment, as matter dematerializes in ever-changing pixels, turning solid into speed and light.

Recent explorations of the concepts of form and content in virtual worlds open a new understanding of the development of novel design paradigms that can induce the sense of presence in virtual worlds. This paper presents current research in the design of presence in virtual worlds. It investigates the impact of two paradigms that integrate the components of form and content: the first is termed: “scenario- based design” and the second is termed: “performance-based design”.

"Digital Fotogrammetric Levantamento Does not Give Capela of Nossa Senhora Escada???" In Proceedings of the 8th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics. SIGraDi. This article describes the use of digital photogrammetric techniques for the survey of Chapel Nossa Senhora da Escada, declared heritage by IPHAN . Institute for National Artistic and Historical Heritage . in 1962. It is one of the firsts chapels built in Brazil, in the middle of sixteenth century. In this paper, we present and discuss the procedures used in this building surveying, since the planning of the measurements until the creation of the photorealistic model in PhotoModeler software. Finally, the accuracy of the 3D model is verified using control points measured by topographical methods.
"Digital Graphics in the Design Process. Case: the U.A.A. Architectural Studio." In Proceedings of the 8th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics. SIGraDi. This work is developing at the moment, tries to find elements that allow arm to a frame of reference for a doctoral thesis that studies the processes of architectonic design and the transformations that this one within the factories of education with the introduction of the digital representation undergoes. It is a study that it initiates in the 2003 with an applied cuasi-experiment to students of the masters in architecture of the Independent University of Nuevo León (Monterrey, México), (work presented/displayed in the forum SIGraDi 2003). Taking into account the results obtained in that one first work it was decided not to take part and to force the student to work with a specific type of tool (digital or traditional), but to leave them chose the work tool freely, observing his photographic process by means of video-recordings, registries and personal interviews with the purpose of explaining because of his processes. The registries were taken in the Factory from semestral Architectonic Design 5°, of the Independent University of Aguascalientes (Mexico).

The digital training of a group of homeless people can expanded through the distribution of interfaces over the internet, developing methodological procedures at the process of conception, implementation and enlargement of housing construction in self-managed building. The making of interactive interface is analyzed through experimentation and workshops done with homeless people having the goal to be totally friendly to its user, not letting him become confused or bored.

The transition of architecture from the two dimensional nature to the three dimensional nature, which results from the use of digital media, generates deep inconformity between the traditional methods of architectural creation and the novel nature of architectural objects. Therefore, there is a need to look at how digital media can impact the design capabilities of architects. This research aims at identifying the impact of digital media on the Knowledge Building and Retrieving capability, through defining this capability and classifying the basic approaches of digital media used in the design process. Depending on both primary data (a global questionnaire) and secondary data (synthesis of the previous research), the results of this study have substantiated the observation that there has been positive impact of various media settings (manual and digital) on the Knowledge Building and Retrieving capability of architects.

From march to july 2004, six brazillian universities. teachers and students groups in Architecture, living in five different brazillian states, were gathered by internet-based communication, and all of their design products have been displayed in specially designed websites. Furthermore, different ways of communicating have been used: messenger chats, e-mails, newsgroups, including the exchange of graphic files. The challenge of this experience was to put in relation schools with inequal levels both in computer equipments and computing design capacities. This paper aims at reading in a very preliminary way the relationship between the use of internet means and the studio.s activities . main goals. As a major conclusion, and despite some organization difficulties, the low cost of the experience and the relative easyness of its development are great reasons to redo it.
"Dynamic interface for axial spatial arrangements using soft computing." In Proceedings of the 8th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics. SIGraDi. This paper describes a computer application that can organize 3D objects along an axis and also redistribute those based on a set of constraints or existing patterns as selected by the user. In particular, the focus of the paper is the two dynamic Graphical User Interfaces (GUIs): the Constraint Arrangement (CA) and the Pattern Arrangement (PA). For these, we use the Soft Computing Techniques . Kohonen.s Self Organizing Map (SOM) and Genetic Algorithm (GA). In both the cases, the application outputs an axial organization of predefined 3D objects which, either adhere to selected constraints or follow patterns set by prior design. The application is implemented, tested and its results are demonstrated using buildings systems.

The objective of this work is to present some reflections about the new possibilities of the teaching of an architectural project from the experiment .inhabiting the city.. The experiment indicates that the classic design studio can benefit from positive effects with the augmentation of the use of the informative medium in the process of teaching and learning as a larger exploration of written language complemented with iconographic register, the drawing and verbal argumentation. Conditions revising position and hierarchy can be created, opening the possibilities for dialogue from the use of tools such as discussion groups, chat rooms, e-mail, moreover affecting research and learning, encouraging students and teachers to relate their knowledge and in contrast, offering a lot more autonomy and liberty.

"Exploration of Relations between Analogies and Sketches During the Generation of Ideas in Industrial Design for Eliciting CAD Requirements." An exploration on the analogy-based idea generation process in industrial design is reported. In particular we try to identify relationships between the sketching process and the analogy building in order to elicit requirements for a supporting software. We use concurrent think aloud protocols to obtain experimental data and an extension of a proved content oriented schema to analyze them. Statistical analysis on segments containing .analogical chains. found relations between analogical and design actions that allow us to support the hypothesis that the sketch seems to be more useful for helping the analytical aspects of the analogical making (i.e. to code a situation in terms of higher order relations) than the synthetic ones (i.e. to identify an analogy source). Results were interpreted as software requirements for a Computer Aided Design Application.
"Faculty Development in Information Technology and Communication Towards the Creation of Collaborative Working and Learning Networks." This program is about upgrading knowledge and user capabilities in Information and Communication Technologies (IT) of our academic team, in order to improve our pedagogical model, and to include these IT into the learning-teaching process for Architecture, Design and Geography. Considering that new technologies are part of the contemporary professional development and they are already included in high school in Chile, they should be part of the university academic environment as well, as an important tool and a link between generations, careers, and stages of education. Estimulating a cultural transformation process in the academic team, promoting transversal network thinking and to generate a base of knowledge in digital culture are our main objectives. This is our contribution to a new academic model, which we need in deed.

The juxtaposition of the temporal element on traditional architecture has created the possibility of a non-hierarchical, .nomadic. space (-Deleuze) which calls for an intriguing phenomenological experience of the inhabitants, in relationship to their architectural space. The paper explores some current theories which propagate these ideas of virtual reality/realism in an attempt to understand the contradictions and connections they make with the .tangible. world. Drawing from Kant.s position that .Nothing that is predicated on its real existence is considerable. the author searches for a more universal understanding of what these virtualities want to be- in this era of diluted tactility. The reason for such questions is not an attempt at ad hoc compartmentalization of these ideas, but more to find a place and meaning in the inevitable evolutionary pattern. In conclusion, the author postulates that it is only when these scripted virtualities are conditioned through such frames of reference will they cease to be merely .temporal. spaces.
"Generating housing layout designs: Fractals as a framework." In Proceedings of the 8th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics. SIGraDi. This paper introduces a computer-based application for three dimensional (3D) landscape simulations of housing-layout-design using the concepts of fractals with Iterative Function System (IFS). At an early phase of designing housing layouts, the designer assigns specific locations and positions for many house-units on an undeveloped site. From a simple template pattern defined by an XML file, this application generates a wide variety of such layout designs in 3D which consists of multiple residential house-units. Along with the house, the unit can include other design components found in a residential development such as a roads, walls, trees etc. The template defines the transformation rules for the IFS. It includes the information of the geometrical relationships between the stages in the iteration and of the components used in stopping the iteration. The application is formulated, implemented and tested. The results got from the case studies are demonstrated and evaluated.

As in Nature the first runs from a dynamic centre, in endless variations until the border, the second moves unsteadily toward a static centre, delineating open systems of transforming rules, using diachronic matrixes. This is a creative route in the site of the Myth of Sisyphus.
"Geometric Modeling as Instrument for Furniture Analysis and Representation." In Proceedings of the 8th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics. SIGraDi. This work explores the Geometric Modeling possibilities as a tool for professional use to the Furniture Design by Interior Architecture professionals. It is considered that the modeling process contributes to the characterization of furniture, since it is necessary the definition of the geometric procedures to generate and control the represented form. Searching for evidences of the kind of contribution, some experiments were developed using chairs from different periods as the object for representation. Three chairs were selected to model, from three different historical periods. The modeling processes were based on the use of 3D Studio Max, registered, analyzed and compared. The results defined references to the use of Digital Graphics to support the representation and also to studies of the furniture form.

"Graphic Representation System for a Localization Study on Activities Related to the Production Cycle of Biodiesel in the Brazilian Northeast." This paper presents the development of graphics interface on GIS (Georeferenced Information System) applied to a location model. The model performs an hierarchical analysis to locate activities related to the Biodiesel production cycle, based on castor oil (Ricinus communis L.). The case study is placed in Brazilian Northeast region, and indicates properly selected counties for Biodiesel major stages: planting, crushing and oil processing. The GIS was implemented on Windows with Personal Geodatabase and Feature Class, applied to SAD 69 references, and involves a large set of administrative, economical, social, environmental and agricultural data. Both partial and final results were obtained with graphical and query methods for selecting and editing data. A fuzzy set program imports territorial offer data and exports location indicators to database. Thematic maps are used for hierarchical data organisation and to perform a Biodiesel stages zone classification, based on graphical analysis of generated data.

With the continuous advancement of scientific knowledge more attention has been paid to the accuracy and consistency of graphic representation in Science Education. In addition, the dissemination of web based distance education has increased the development of new educational material and tools; nevertheless many of them have poor efficacy due to the lack of a design that integrates the interdisciplinary needs of the educational project into product planning and development. This paper presents the results of the design of a constructivist computer based learning environment (WEB based or CD-ROM) aimed at the teaching and learning of Classic Genetics. The analyses of results revealed that the prototype design was approved by specialists in the fields of Genetics, Educational Technology, and Informatics; it was also perceived as a powerful learning tool by students.

In the same time, evolutions in computing allow present personal computers to handle digital representations of whole historic cities. We need to assess the nature of operating restriction so that the result obtained can be used as a scientific product, while still of a size compatible with current devices. possibilities. Concepts such as urban spatial perception, fidelity to historic research sources, and urban theory applied to uncertainty, will underpin hypothesis for the virtual renaissance of cities of our past. We present a digital model of Granada (Spain), based on a morphological hypothesis of the XIX century. It is based on specific theories to achieve typological models of buildings which original morphology is uncertain and on techniques for the geometrical optimisation and creation of scenes. The paper also presents the sources used, e.g. romantic travellers drawings, historic local maps, old photographs, engravings, literary descriptions.

The present study takes part of a exploratory/experimental research of qualitative nature that looks for the creation of virtual worlds for the continued qualification online and focuses on the investigation of socio-cognitive behaviors of subjects during their organization as a group and during the activity of building and using these worlds.
"Infographics Applied to Cultural Heritage: the Case of "Ninfeo de Campetti (Veio)"." In Proceedings of the 8th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics. SIGraDi. São Leopoldo, Brasil: Universidade do Vale do Rio dos Sinos, 2004. This paper presents the results of an in-depth study and virtual reconstruction of the Nymphaeum of Veio, in the archaeological zone of Villa Campetti, Rome. The study consisted in analysing the vestiges and enlightening the findings with a thorough literature review about the Nymphaeum itself as well as about contemporary and similar constructions. A digital model was then elaborated, as an attempt to recreate the Nymphaeum of Veio as it may have stood during the Roman period. The Nymphaeum had been decorated with roman frescoes of the III style, now highly deteriorated. The virtual reconstruction intends to reproduce the harmony of volumes, structure and paintings of the chamber. It also helps to better understand its configuration. This kind of reconstruction, based on historical and architectural research, offers great possibilities in the world or architectonic and archaeological heritage, allows the recovery and analysis of spaces otherwise lost forever.

The purpose of this research is to find the formalization levels for the Baralt Square space, its variations and .intangible urban. identity, derived from the various uses given to it as well as from the development of activities it has undergone, which have generated a collective and dynamic space, rather than from the result of planning. To achieve this, a work methodology will be applied to obtain answers regarding the creation of this public space, through virtual urbanism. The use of digital technologies in the historical, architectonic and urban reconstruction of the square will allow for finding its origins, the collective memory and the intangible.

Starting from fieldwork and from a photogrammetric survey of the site, the digital model has become a highly qualified tool in the research process. Through virtual navigation, it allows to learn new aspects about spatial configuration of this characteristic constructions that configure the basis for the development of further architectures during the following centuries. Furthermore, being conscious that knowledge is basic for cultural heritage preservation, this 3D reconstruction model is an important instrument for general dissemination and for implementing a visit to this significant case of Islamic architecture in Spain.

"Mercedes: a Sustainable Ecoproject in Towns with Historical Patrimony." In Proceedings of the 8th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics. SIGraDi. This proposal addresses the following topic of a doctoral thesis in progress: The Evolution and Development of Digitized Processes for the Research and Maintenance of Small Town Patrimonies, School and Architecture and Urban Design, University of Buenos Aires, co-directed by architects A. Montagu and R. Gutierrez. The research has been based on the town of Mercedes, Province of Buenos Aires, Argentina, symbols of Buenos Aires.s cultural heritage. At this stage, we are looking for alternative methods to support a project of patrimonial preservation that would help define future landscapes of small towns, and, at the same time, would have minimal or positive environmental impact. This analysis proposes reflexive studies of the paradigms affecting the environment and the feasibility of the project, with the intention of utilizing the concept of .ecoproject.. Therefore, the crucial assistance of specific digital systems, from which evolution is analyzed, supports and enhances the efficiency of the proposed goal. New and broad research opportunities are opening up in this field.
"Modeling by means of Movement Capture." In Proceedings of the 8th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics. SIGraDi. São Leopoldo, Brasil: Universidade do Vale do Rio dos Sinos, 2004. Keyframing, Morphing, Inverse Kinematics; they are all animation technics which have been explored by diverse groups of architects, academics and students, searching for new horizons in the proyecting process development, pushing forward the present limits of proyecting methodology. We define this project starting by the explorative use of animation tools as experimental variables in reformulating our design processes. Data input have been traditionally carried out using classic interfaces such as keyboard, mouse, graphics tablet, among others. Despite this is accepted by many as the standard way of communicating with machines, we think this is still very far from the ideal way to design and model new proposals. In this context we propose to investigate a new way to approach to the computed aided modelling process, questioning and reformulating traditional interfaces in user .machine communication.
"Multi-functional Architecture in Sào Paulo: Form, Technique and Urban Integration." In Proceedings of the 8th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics. SIGraDi. This work intends to show the development of a research that has been conducted by a group of professors of the schools of Architecture and Urbanism and the School of Communications and Arts, both from Mackenzie Presbyterian University, focusing the multifunctional buildings of the city of São Paulo. This special interest on multifunctional buildings . where residences, commercial and business areas share the same space . is based on the fact that they represent a new paradigm of living in the city, brought by the Industrial Revolution, which is being reconsidered nowadays as a solution to the revitalization and reoccupation of the big cities central areas. The result of this work will be a book supported by a website that will help to understand the urban development of São Paulo and the meaning of this kind of buildings in the context of the city.
"Network 3D Modeling Environment Evaluation." In Proceedings of the 8th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics. SIGraDi. São Leopoldo, Brasil: Universidade do Vale do Rio dos Sinos, 2004. This research aims to develop a three-dimensional representation method for complex environmental systems based on the environmental impacts derived from actions or interactions amongst the elements of the studied systems and associated systems. It is a method for representing matrices in networks which contemplates the simulation of causes and effects and the visualization of interdependence links amongst the subsystems making them up and also amongst adjacent systems. The methodology includes the observation and study of an environmental system with the consequent formulation of a networked matrix and, finally, its modeling through a three-dimensional software. Both the elements and the interactions are represented as three-dimensional items with a shape, color, and size of their own. The practical result is a three-dimensional animation in which all the elements of the environmental system and their connections are represented.
"New Presentation Forms of Contents for Architectural Distance Education." In Proceedings of the 8th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics. SIGraDi. São Leopoldo, Brasil: Universidade do Vale do Rio dos Sinos, 2004. The proposal of a model to present contents, intends to consolidate the cooperation among the fields of knowledge that will contribute to introduce this presentation in virtual environments. This proposal intends to continue the work developed in the ALFA T-GAME Project (Teaching Computer Graphics and Multimedia), financed by the European community. The results of this ALFA Project, mainly for architecture, acquired a special meaning due to the relevant presence of images in different specialized courses, that require a synthesis for its versatility and interaction in digital means. The majority of the materials produced is in the early stages of the development and structure of contents. In this way, the project will seek results that contribute to the new ways of presenting the contents that collaborate with the Architecture teaching/learning, from the interchange of the acquired experience, both in e-learning technology and the disciplinary area of Architecture.
"O panorama digital interativo no estudo da arquitetura." In Proceedings of the 8th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics. SIGraDi. São Leopoldo, Brasil: Universidade do Vale do Rio dos Sinos, 2004. Digital tools in current use are designed to help in the production of project drawings in architectural offices. However, the same types of software have invaded students. practice in the design studio. The effect of their use in early stages of the design process show a deceitful professionalization of drawings. At the same time this alters deeply the design process and therefore how students learn to design. This work shows through examples of our Studios that unless the designer has an in-depth knowledge of the design process, the introduction of CAD works against creativeness. The reason is that students lack an extensive training both as CAD operators and as designers. Their creativeness is molded by the conventions of a half-learned software. The introduction of open software systems can improve their training, but this will demand a new approach to Studio teaching.

This research is a work in progress in the development of parametric systems for modeling of complex shapes. The research takes on the fundamental rules for form generation of column knots of the Expiatory Temple of the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona. Designed by the Spanish Architect, Antonio Gaudi, the forms of the Sagrada Familia represent a synthesis of manipulation of simple geometrical rules and the use of basic procedures which result in a rich language with no precedents in architecture.
"Parametric Surfaces and Architecture: Concepts, Ideation and Development." In Proceedings of the 8th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics. SIGraDi. São Leopoldo, Brasil: Universidade do Vale do Rio dos Sinos, 2004. By incorporating parametric surfaces and spline entities into the shape modeling computer systems, new design and production graphic tools have been created in the conceptual and poetic field of architecture; thus allowing an intuitive approach to the fast production of complex shapes with a minimum amount of data and specific knowledge. The analogous production systems (constrained by the material resources and constructive procedures present in the local existing technologies) are challenged by design and virtual simulation systems, suggesting new relationships between the architectural features and their representation: the creation of a symbolic and dynamic information space where the representation affects the identity of what is being represented. Taking into account this current challenge mentioned above, we have decided to work in the mixture, without reciprocal exclusions or substitutions, proposing some work alternatives to approach the issue under discussion in the Architecture Workshop.

The didactic activity related to the teaching of Perspective has been revised considering the possibility offered by the computing tools. This review must evaluate the potentialities of concepts and procedures related to the traditional techniques as sources for architectural graphics expression, before suggesting its suppression. It is possible to improve the accuracy and quickness controlling the visualization parameters of three-dimensional models. On the other hand, it is necessary to explore the development of the ability to construct quick hand made perspectives (sketches). This work searches for the development of a structure to the teaching process, which emphasizes the potentiality of both ways, traditional and computerized. It explores the flexibility of teaching, from face to face to distance learning, and introduces an enlarged structure of knowledge able to support the traditional and also a computerized process of representation.

"Pinhaldigital, Mnemonic Structure and Processes of Multimedia in Coffee Farms: History, Architecture and Technology." In Proceedings of the 8th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics. SIGraDi. This article has two aims, first to discuss the use of mnemonic structures in multimedia processes with complex contents in the example of the research project and activity PinhalDigital. Moreover it intends to describe the transdisciplinar method used for the production of the application, developing didactic extracurricular and interdisciplinary activities in the areas of history, architecture and technology through the use of multimedia construction processes. PinhalDigital was born of an initiative between the University of São Paulo, the Federal University of São Carlos and the Fazenda Pinhal, as objective to structuralize and to organize the diverse layers and the multiple aspects of the rich history of the Fazenda Pinhal in São Carlos. As a mnemonic basis was chosen a painting that represents the Fazenda Pinhal in 1900 by famous painter Benedicto Calixto de Jesus, which almost realistic portrays shows diverse objects and important and identification spaces of the diverse aspects and activities carried out through this plantation.

Moreover to realize a short analysis of this new paradigms establishes by digital media, Pix-me: hybrid of the human and machine, as an artistic pretension, get the signs of this new senses currented on cyberspace and bring it again to this place in a representive way of this context that we are living in. Playing with the game of visibility in a media, the portifolio, that was created, essencially, to make people visible.

"Simulated Artificial Lighting in Design Teaching." In Proceedings of the 8th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics. SIGraDi. São Leopoldo, Brasil: Universidade do Vale do Rio dos Sinos, 2004. This paper presents the preliminary results of an architectural design studio research developed with undergraduate students of UNISINOS architecture course. The aim was to search for a tool that potentially would allow them to use artificial lighting as element of architectural composition and characterization of the project. The architectural design could be defined as a virtual anticipation of the real architectural object. Being previous to the construction of the architectural object, it is an exploration of a possibility of existence of that same object that is figured in the shown form. As result, the issue of representation takes the status of logical proposition, from which is possible to verify if the tentative solution proposed by the designers could actually have an existence in the world and, if it.s true, fully evaluate its potential. This way it would be possible for the designers to also critically reflect about their own design practice.

Architectural animations are like Harry Langer, a fifty-something entertainment mogul played by best actor nominee Jack Nicholson in the film Something.s Gotta Give. They.ve been surrounded by plenty of pathetic spiritless gimmicks. And, like Harry in the film, they have suffered a heart attack. Harry did not die. Architectural animations are still around, barely. Something.s wrong with them. When Harry begins to recover, he.s surprised to find himself growing fond of a woman his own age (played by best actress nominee Dianne Keaton). This is precisely what should happen to architectural animations. They need to come to terms with more mature attitudes and approaches. This paper presents a new and different approach to architectural animations. In ninety nine percent of the cases, architectural animations have been produced at the end of the design process, just when architects or architecture students are ready to present their schemes to an audience or client group. All design decisions have been made. All aspects of the architectural solutions have been set. Tectonic qualities, lighting schemes, construction approaches, everything has been cast in stone. The animation is simply shown as a public relations gesture to broadcast to the audience that the design team is digitally savvy and uses the latest technologies. The proposition contained herein is that animations be used throughout the design process, that is, from beginning to end.

This software is the experimental part of the MSc project (still in its initial phase) developed in the School of Communication of UFRJ, in the line of research Communication Technologies and Aesthetics.

This article summarizes the history of the standardization efforts in the architectural, engineering and construction industry and focuses on the three phases of the life cycle of a building, namely design, construction and use phases. Data and information needs of each phase tends to be quite different than one another, thus leading to difficulty in seamless exchange and integration between different constituents of the AEC industry. Downstream data users expect the architect to generate digital design information that is usable in the construction and use phases of a building.s life cycle. Recently American Institute of Architects have assembled a congress in Washington DC, bringing together representatives from the AEC/FM industry, government agencies, software industry and academic institutions. This paper is a summary of the presentation this author gave at this congress in April, 2004.
"Structuring the Unstructural: the Metaphor of the Theater of the Memory from Giulio Camilo in the Construction of Virtual Space." The subject of this article starts from studies that come being developed regarding the use of Mnemonic structures in relation to the conception of spaces, architectural projects, and its correlations with the images languages and the signs and its occurrences, applications and uses in spacial uses. Great part of the current examples of memorization structures applications in spacialities design are related to experimental virtual environments, mainly tied with the artistic production and/or the studies of design of user-computer interfaces. Our research suggests a new look at this subject, considering to investigate, beyond the virtual spacialities, applications in the concrete and hybrid spaces. In this article we propose to argue the subject from two metaphors related to the theater: the metaphor proposal for Brenda Laurel in Computer as a Theatre and the boarding of Giulio Camilo [ 1480-1544 ] in its Theater of the Memory.

Studio of art and programing. ) takes a large mixed group of students ( engineering, art, architecture, music, etc..) with very different levels of skills, for a sustained immersion into an exploration context. Eliminating in a large measure the problem of .costs. by using obsolete, discarded computer parts, students manipulate, observe, deconstruct, reconstruct functional hardware and use programming to produce an expressive documentation of the process. The objective is not to work on .products. but on the production of .symbolic value. by uncovering and staging the fundamentals of electro-digital-computational knowledge into a form of .theater of technology..
"Study of Solar Obstructions through Digital Graphics." In Proceedings of the 8th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics. SIGraDi. São Leopoldo, Brasil: Universidade do Vale do Rio dos Sinos, 2004. This paper is a final work for Graphic Control of Solar Light & Natural Lighting Course, which belong to the Doctorate Program Curricullum of Achitectonic Representation of the Escuela Superior de Arquitectura, Universitat Politecnica de Catalunya, in Barcelona, Spain. The main idea of this work was to find and to describe the advantages of informatics and technology tools used for the study of the solar obstructions. The traditional technique adopted in our graduate course was static and repetitive. What would had to be a system of analysis of natural light behaviour and the influence produced by the buildings around, as a constructed medium, was presented as a drawing exercise in spherical perspective. Our work was well received not only because we obtained a complete luminic analysis, correct, expressive and realistic, but too, as a research in which clearly appears the multiple tools offered by technology to realize such a study.
"Teaching Hand and Digital Representation to Architects and Designers." In Proceedings of the 8th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics. SIGraDi. São Leopoldo, Brasil: Universidade do Vale do Rio dos Sinos, 2004. The supremacy of the digital means of representation and communication and the resulting shift of the manual means in the field of design and architecture, have engendered multiple opinions and literature. They focus and analyze the virtues and risks, the losses and substitutions, and the different expressive, productive and conceptual results of their leading role in the creative process. Furthermore, if we consider both as two extremes, apparently opposed, a broad panorama of combinations and additions are produced by the emerging group of hybrid practices. This motivated the development of a research project in the Universidad Nacional del Litoral de Santa Fe, Argentina, under the Program CAI+D 2000 dealing with Design and the Analog – Digital Means. From this project emerged a collection of conceptual speculations and experimentations in the extended field of representation, extended by the incorporation of new means and hybridations, searching for new parameters and methods for professional training and practice. "Temporality and Movement in a Digital Design Experience." In Proceedings of the 8th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics. SIGraDi. This paper proposes an analysis of resulting product of a didactical design experience produced into digital environment in architectural shape context. The line of argument is the study of temporality and movement as necessary conditions of shape to be experienced in two levels: the literal-objective and the phenomenic-perceptual. An hipermedia design proceeding of interconnected character, not lineal, with superposition of project process and presentation strategies in hipertextual organization has been developed. The student involves himself as producer-operator, into rational and intuitive levels simultaneously, to generate and simulate, conditions and architectural experiences by using digital media. As a result of this experience abilities and proper worths of the digital media are recognized, that encourage reflection and creativity, allowing to increase critical and aesthetic capabilities in producing the architectural work.
"Territorial Communities - Virtual Dimensions." In Proceedings of the 8th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics. SIGraDi. São Leopoldo, Brasil: Universidade do Vale do Rio dos Sinos, 2004. The research on contemporary habitation spaces has much to do with the study of the relationship between new media and everyday life. This paper presents a huge ongoing research which intends to discuss, on a conceptual basis, those relationships in different ways. The goal of the research work is to collect and to examine data produced by the intervention in a real community, at Cidade Tiradentes district, in the city of San Paolo. A collaborative multi-users interfaces is being specially designed, supported by different kinds of electronic equipments. The project aims at analyzing the utilization of those information and communication technologies, and its impact in poor communities. As a hypothesis, we want to verify if the access to informations will be able to make larger the social interactions and to improve the creation of new services, in order to guarantee a better quality of life.

In terms of disciplinary issues, at stake is our ability to inhabit this new space as .designers. and not just as spectators. In the mid 90s, two theories engaged in a major confrontation. The first valued the virtual dimension of architectural space (W. J. Mitchell, City of Bits, 1995), the other valued the tectonic dimension and its constructive poiesis (K. Frampton, Studies in Tectonic Culture, 1995). Although divergent in their view of architecture.s role in the future of our technological societies, both theories revealed aspects of our relationship to the contemporary body that were, and today remain, inseparable. Where Mitchell.s book clearly intends to establish cyberspace as a new playground for architects, giving convincing examples of the programmatic mutations of modern spatiality, Kenneth Frampton.s work, Studies in Tectonic Culture, reexamines the constructive culture underlying the modern conception of space. Neither a simple history text nor a collection of technical poetry, this latter work is a manifesto developing a set of materialist ethics for the discipline of architecture. This "rappel à lordre" to resist the increasing dematerialization of architecture closes tentatively with Le Corbusier.s classic metaphor of the acrobat: The architect, he said, must not look for truth in extremes. Rather, he must struggle constantly to maintain balance. .Nobody asked him to do this. Nobody owes him any thanks. He lives in the extraordinary world of the acrobat.. Following Le Corbusier.s advice, and in consideration of current and recurrent tensions between the virtual and the tectonic, what can we say today of such a delicate equilibrium?
"The Application of Interactive Plasma Screens in the Design Studio." In Proceedings of the 8th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics. SIGraDi. São Leopoldo, Brasil: Universidade do Vale do Rio dos Sinos, 2004. This paper elaborates on the use of electronic pin-ups in real-time local reviews making use of larger format interactive plasma screens. The paper briefly explains the technical aspects of an actual implementation in the College of Architecture at Texas A&M University. The main focus of the paper is placed on the use of a 61. interactive plasma screen in a graduate design studio during the second semester of 2003 and the benefits that such an implementation has reported. The narrative explains how the use of an interactive plasma screen for informal as well as formal reviews is not only saving printing resources but it is also having a very positive impact on how we conduct design reviews.

A thorough discussion of the concept of scale should start with an analysis of the way in which we perceive natural objects, specially architectural objects. This perception appears as continuous but is not: there are some stages that can be identified as belonging to some .natural visual scale.. Traditional graphic scales do not relate clearly with this natural scale due to old technical problems. So the discussion proceeds towards the notion of multiresolution and how the concept of scale should be developped to cover properly the characteristics of virtual models, attempting to provide a conceptual framework for this discussion.
"The Conception of Architecture in a Computational Environment - the Tool as an Intervening Factor during the Generation of Ideas (Paavi- Architectural Project in Interactive Virtual Environments)." This study presents the results obtained as of the teaching of architectural project at a digital workshop using the WEB environment and its graphic and textual interaction tools. Sketches and external and internal 3D modeling of the architectural object formed the corpus of this investigation. The architectural concept phase (generation of ideas) was given pedagogical emphasis, based on a core concept established by conceptual images and to which space, software and formal construction elements are subordinated. The computational tool was seen to become one of the agents in the idea generation process by assisting in the arrangement of the designer.s initial ideas and by establishing project procedures that use computer-based operations. These project procedures reconstruct the object perceived as architectural concept. The central notion in the architectural proposition is the decisive element in the choice and use of the graphic software in the design process, considering its different steps.

It also discusses how much methodological questions are determinant in a VDS and how, in academic virtual studios, this aspect can be more significant than the technological ones. This is especially important considering the technological limitations, related to the economic limitations of Brazilian universities and society.

"The fifth elevation: Effects of digital graphic design and printing technologies on the urban fabric in developing countries." In Proceedings of the 8th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics. The paper reports on a study that identifies the effects of current advertising and printing technologies on urban spaces in developing countries. The complexities of these advertising applications form a complicated hierarchical web that requires an investigation of surface- volume-context relationships to minimize the tension between the graphical message and the urban fabric. Regressive application of technology-based graphic design and advertisement in the form of billboards and signage, form a new layer identified as the fifth elevation. The study endeavors for positive consequences of such elevations and differentiates between chaos and complexity. Consequently, the study categorizes various advertising schemes and recommends short-term guidelines to reduce chaotic amalgamation. Several design factors and new advertising schemes are proposed to sustain cultural and visual coherency of urban spaces. When applied, these recommendations could prove useful for many cities in the Middle East due to planning, cultural, economical, and religious, similarities.

The purpose of this work was to delineate the sense of using instructional applications with digital media, not to replace but to support the activities of the courses of morphology for Industrial Design. On this occasion we concentrated only on explanatory material. We found out that there are two main features that justify the application of these new media. They are constituent aspects of them: density and flexibility. Density is obtained through the multiple representations that digital media enable. Flexibility allows us to bring these representations together in alternative narrations, according to the different requirements of our teaching activities. An educational application, in order to be educational, should be dynamic and changing, defying the idea of an optimized and unique way of reaching comprehension. So, an intentional use of digital media becomes a powerful and accessible tool to make this happen.

This communication is part of six other contributions from different authors, which aim to provide an overall discussion of a Brazilian Virtual Design Studio. This paper focuses the tools applied in a VDS within a Latin-American context of public universities with limited budget and its organization. The tools are discussed in three main phases of the exercise: the group formation, the design process, and the debates and crits. Despite the limited resources, we conclude and suggest that such experience should be pursued by other schools in similar conditions.
"The Potential of Digital Animation as a Tool for Design Evaluation." In Proceedings of the 8th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics. SIGraDi. The digital animation provides the exploration of virtual expression making it possible to undertand complexities in architectural design. The purpose of this research was to verify user perception of the architectonic project through computerized animation. An experiment was developed to identify the user architectonic perception when watching the project animation compared to the reality of the accomplished kitchen project. Two kinds of digital animation were experimented: a simplified animation (using standard shading and render preview) and a realistic animation (using scanline resource for digital scenes rendering). It was verified that the simplified digital animation presents satisfactory cost-benefit relation in order to obtain design understanding for both, user and designer. Based on this experiment, directives were specified for the creation and aplication of a questionary together with design digital animation in order to verify architectonic program requeriments, for increased design compreehation.
"The Representation of Urban Heritage in Hyperdocuments: a Study on the Monroe Palace." In Proceedings of the 8th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics. SIGraDi. This paper discusses the use of hyperdocuments to portray urban heritage, focusing in the possibilities of narrative structure brought by electronic network narrative. The chosen building is the former house of the Brazilian Senate, the Monroe Palace, for even after being demolished in 1976, is still somehow present as heritage. It also aims to develop a hyperdocument system of recombinatory pieces that allow for individual layouts that can be stored, retrieved and shared among users.
"The solitary confinement cell of punta de rieles: a place with stories to tell." In Proceedings of the 8th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics. SIGraDi. The question posed by my research is about how to create a visualization of a place that presents different personal recollections. My research addresses this issue through a case study: the visualization of a women.s political prison, located in Punta de Rieles, Uruguay, during the Uruguayan dictatorship (1973-85). The visualization will be based on the memories recounted by these women. My research will result in a written report and an audiovisual installation. The installation will provide an immersive experience centered on the solitary confinement cell. The implementation suggests changes in lighting in the solitary confinement cell as the main formal expression of the variations in the women.s testimonies.

Our proposition was changing in this structure and introducing a discussion about new methodology of teaching of .Informática Aplicada a Arquitetura.. The general objective is discussing about a new methodology of teaching this subject in architecture and urbanism course. The paper conclude that, in spite of a very preliminary conclusion, it shows that is fundamental changing the idea of this subject introducing new discursion and new form of adapt ting this subject with the new concept of design in architecture.
"The Use of Cyberspace in Architectural Form Visualization in Interior Spaces during the Design Process." In Proceedings of the 8th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics. SIGraDi. The architecture graphics presentation, showing three-dimensional space designed by the architect from bidimensional elements, besides being insufficient. But, just the three-dimensional presentation of this space does no guarantee its total visualization. It is necessary a way in which the observer can visualize and interact with it. For that reason it is needed to use the digital space. But, it can not be limited to the presentation of three-dimensional objects, because it brings the possibility of communication and information transmission through cyberspace. So, an investigation was done through bibliographical references and questions to architects to study how and what the graphics elements should be demonstrate for the correct visualization. Next, with those information, it was developed a prototype site to the visualization of the internal spaces of a design used as an example and after that this prototype was verified in a group of architects and a group of non-expert people.

The objective of this paper is to develop a methodology in integrated municipal planning in Family Health, using tools such as the Geographic Information System and programs already implemented in towns, to provide the methodology of sustainable and participative urbanization derived from new federal, state and municipal legislations. By the end of the study it was possible to build a data model spacial oriented, located in Tubarão, Santa Catarina, at Dehon and Morrotes suburbs, achieving about 6 thousand people. The obtained results justify the implementaion of a Geographic Information System in health, in order to manage the daily collected data in Family Health Program, optimizing and helping in the application of public politics. "The use of learning algorithms for real-time immersive data visualization in buildings." In Proceedings of the 8th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics. SIGraDi. São Leopoldo, Brasil: Universidade do Vale do Rio dos Sinos, 2004. Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) simulations are used to predict indoor thermal environments and assess their response to specific internal/external conditions. Although computing power has increased exponentially in the past decade, CFD simulations are time consuming and their prediction results cannot be used for real-time immersive visualization in buildings. A method that can bypass the time consuming simulations and generate .acceptable. results will allow such visualization to be constructed. This paper discusses a project that utilizes Artificial Neural Network (ANN) as a learning algorithm to predict post-processed CFD data to ensure rapid data visualization. The technique has been integrated with an immersive Augmented Reality (AR) system to visualize CFD results in buildings. ANN was also evaluated against a linear regression model. Both models were tested and validated with datasets to determine their degree of accuracy. Initial tests, conducted to evaluate the user.s experience of the system, indicated satisfactory results.
"The Virtual Learning Environment in Architecture and Design at UFSC - from Project to Reality." In Proceedings of the 8th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics. SIGraDi. This article presents the theoretical basis and the structure that supports the virtual learning process on a collaborative environment for Architecture and Design: VLE-AD. The virtual environment is modelled based on the presuppositions of the Problems Based Learning (PBL) and on the distance collaboration based with the fundamentals of constructivism and socio-interacionism. A specific environment for problems resolution is offered together with syncronic and assyncronic communication tools. The site is structured with learning activities in several modalities: contents, exercises and problems. The evaluation was preformed with the on-line course .Color applied in Graphical Design..The results has proven to be very positive for design and architecture distant learning in applying the tripod: Communication and Information Technology, Theoretical contents and Problems. The online participation and the resolution steps of the problems has been highlighted as a main factor to improve learning and avoid the ghost of loneliness pointed by students from some distant learning courses and responsible for the high number of abandonment.

This paper reports a design experiment with first year.s students in two European countries .It reviews the role that computers can play in the early design stages and considers how far recent developments in commercial software have enabled designers to improve their design performance using CAAD systems. The authors are teaching architectural design in first and forth year in two European countries and are also involved in teaching Computer Aided Architectural Design. The starting point for our experiment was the fact that we realized that most of the students in our faculties still start their design with pen and paper. Although they introduce the computer quite early in the design process now their first design ideas were mainly visualized in sketches. Is this because of the often stated limitations of hard and software or because we start to teach them to sketch when we do design? This paper attempts to address some of the issues and find some answers.

We argue that this process might enhance the development of autonomy, solidarity and cooperation, which are relevant cognitive abilities to the profile of young architects.

This project had as goal to investigate how an urban space can be represented, and how can we to present information that facilitated broad and interactive spatial analysis in an easy and friendly way. This target was reached trough the elaboration of a computer application that allowed urban information visualization about Salvador City. This tool let users to build thematic cartography, visualize interactive 3D models, images, etc. Project development already produced two different prototypes. First versions provide a great spatial analyze flexibility, but it interface founded in a workspace defined do not allow user to do all overlayer possible. In this case the tool was a kind of cartographic atlas. The actual version had as design presuppose, to give users more information, interactivity, power and flexibility, adopting new medias, new representation models, and presenting quantitative and qualitative information.

After a brief explanation about wearable computer, some projects will be presented, emphasizing the device as a mediator of personal experiences and poetic procedures.

This Paper discusses the experience acquired from the user-compatible development of a digital city model as an aid to urban planning based on the endeavours of a large Austrian city. The method selected was a structured survey of the future users of the "Digital City". In the case in question, the addressee is initially an "internal" client, in other words the staff of the Urban Planning Department. Above all findings it seems vital to work more intensive on common terminology and concepts to facilitate the communication between all those involved in creating digital three-dimensional City Models.
"You Have Hunger of What?" In Proceedings of the 8th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics. SIGraDi. São Leopoldo, Brasil: Universidade do Vale do Rio dos Sinos, 2004. This project . presented in the form of an artistic installation . focuses on the social, economic and political causes of hunger, its challenges, consequences and possible solutions. Those issues are discussed through the views, ideas and perceptions of 100 people we interviewed. People who live in diverse economic contexts, who face different challenges, eat different types of food . or who don.t have anything to eat. They discuss their different needs, desires, requisites and willingness. They talk about their awareness (or their lack of knowledge) of the dramatic figures of hunger, they share their thoughts and ideas on how we can reduce or eliminate hunger, on what are they doing for that to happen, and on what they believe can be done. We believe that a more realistic framework of understanding of hunger enables people to make real choices, choices that can contribute to ending this spreading human suffering.

Inside of a public politics project . Comunidades Online . that considers the construction of a virtual community as intervention in a concrete community, the article considers some initial parameters capable to guide the design of a virtual environment of dialogue and interaction for this on-line community. The objective of this article is to trace the main lines that will direct the design process this environment in a boarding with approaches to the architecture, placing on questions to the space where this dialogue happens. The work develops from the discussions circa the concept of community; of interfaces examples that illustrate different ways to give quality support to the dialogue between users, and one more consistent representation of .I., as well as expression of the identity in the virtual environment; and of an alternative presentation for technological basement, the semantic web.
