"1931 Art and Revolution: Lúcio Costa and the School of Fine Arts." In Proceedings of the 7th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics. SIGraDi. Rosarió, Argentina: Universidad Nacional de Rosarió, 2003. The cd-rom 1931 Art and Revolution: Lucio Costa and the School of Fine Arts has been produced from newspaper excerpts published between November 1930 and October 1931, registering Lúcio Costa's term as director of the ENBA, the national school of Fine Arts, and the social-cultural context at the time. The transfer of the collected information to digital media aims to spread the knowledge of the selected events, making it possible for researchers to study the subject anywhere. This project represents a segment of the effort of our group, whose wider objective is to generate material and knowledge associated with the intellectual history of Brazilian architecture and urbanism, from the 19th and 20th centuries.
"3D models and database: investigations on historical narratives." In Proceedings of the 7th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics. SIGraDi. Rosarió, Argentina: Universidad Nacional de Rosarió, 2003. RIO-H is a web-based system that aims to present an alternative to historical narrative. Images from 3D historical models of Rio de Janeiro link spaces within the city to historical documents stored in a database. The users retrieve the files of different sources associated to specific areas in the city. The 3D historical images facilitate the creation of relationships between the city in the past and the current city users dwell. Thus, users experience in the current city is critical for the generation of images of the past city and individual historical narratives as they navigate through the system.

The project 5 Centuries of figuration consists in a didactic exhibition, built by students of arts, displaying the different kinds of human representation, in with reference to most significant works created by the great artists of Western History of Art, from the Renaissance period until our days.

Genetic information determines the germ of life, the first idea, that encloses all the power of creation. In every "germ" lays the identity, the strength to seek and fulfill expression in form. History, technical and scientific progress require new answers and provide new tools while encouraging investigation. A "Branch", a simple nature element, is reinterpreted into bits of information, reconstructed after being apprehended. This process reveals new elements that could have never been conceived with traditional methods. Nature and Technology complement each other in an embriological growing system that provides a new concept in the construction of real spaces.
"A pedagogical experience of analog-digital interaction in the learning of the form." In Proceedings of the 7th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics. SIGraDi. This work treats the most outstanding aspects in experiences that conjugate analogical and digital processes in the teaching and learning in the way, carried out in the School of Architecture of the UNMDP, Argentina. A new dialogue space among the ways of manual and digital production, motivates the student beginning to traffic a path toward other and new thought forms that it spreads to achieve growing levels of autonomy. In this productive space of interactions, the necessity of both means is verified, since each one has different and inaccessible potentialities to the other one and its interaction transcends its individual advantages.
"About the design of a multimedia and hypertextual system for the university classroom." In Proceedings of the 7th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics. SIGraDi. Rosarió, Argentina: Universidad Nacional de Rosarió, 2003. The purpose of this paper is to introduce the hypermedia system software "Del átomo a la materia en el Laboratorio virtual". This system, developed using "Toolbook", is an interactive software for the experimental teaching of Quantum Physics for undergraduate engineering and science students.
"Action Planning through Digital Workshop." In Proceedings of the 7th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics. SIGraDi. Rosarió, Argentina: Universidad Nacional de Rosarió, 2003. This paper discusses efforts of disseminating urban development program in a developing country setting by employing digital workshop in action planning workshops. The setting of urban development projects is usually very complicated. Socioeconomic background and people's properties are varied. That's why it is reasonable if problem approach is generated through a study on the potential of utilizing digital methods. Complicated variables also lead to study the possibility of not focusing on certain mode of workshop, since each workshop has its own plus-minus that might only be effective for certain variables in case study.

T-GAME Project integrates the academical achievement of eight European and Latin American universities in order to design a series of interdisciplinaries courses, related to computer graphics, to be assumed in new standard and post grade plans of study by those universities.

The aim of this report is to develop a digital pattern easy to use, which will be a suitable tool to display images and texts for academic purposes. The proposal is done through the configuration of a html code page. Besides the study proposes to carry out a digital catalog in order to make easy the files and communication of graphic and photographic documentation. The case of some urban transformations in Rosario's riverside sets an example of its use and verifies its potential condition.
"An experimental method to test aid tools for conception." In Proceedings of the 7th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics. SIGraDi. Rosarió, Argentina: Universidad Nacional de Rosarió, 2003. This article describes an experiment which is part of a research project aimed at developing a tool for use as an assistant in initial conception in architecture. The experimental prototype "kaleidoscope" is based on the notion that external references stimulate the appearance of new design ideas. The experiment aims to note and obtain conclusions regarding the nature of the association between images (reference sources) and architectural concepts, as well as that of the navigation through the created references when the users are in a situation of conception. The methodology consists of placing two subjects in contact with the system while making video recordings of all their gestures and sketches for later qualitative analysis.
"Analysis of the lighting Behavior in Buildings by means of Digital Tools." In Proceedings of the 7th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics. SIGraDi. In temperate humid climates, like Rosario city, (33 S, 60 W), in which heating and cooling loads are required seasonally, daylighting and artificial lighting optimization, under an energy saving basis are essential issues for designers. Energy reduction in buildings permits lower functioning costs, better maintenance, and overall economy. Electricity consumption in offices has increased in the latest years due to an intensive use of artificial lighting and new appliances (computers, printers). This equipment also generates heat which must be eliminated, increasing further energy consumption. This paper focuses on spaces assessment and adjustment through digital tools aid, so as to evaluate strategies of interior lighting performance.

This research aims to verify the possibility to apply principles of Complexity Thinking as appointed by Edgar Morin, in the conception of Virtual Architectures. His researches are directed by the preoccupation with a nonmutilated knowledge, connecting fraction and totality, subject and object. To support the intention to built an immersive virtual environment applying this principles, the basic object of this research is to understand how the Complex Theory affects the Virtual Environment Architecture, analyzing its history and the possibilities of application; illustrating virtual or hybrid architectural examples which where influenced by the Complex Theory and its capability to support interaction.

The conceptualization of architectural space is undergoing radical innovation. Architect-designers have become perceptual painters of animate experience through the use of digital stereoscopic technologies that permit the sensorial intensity of an experience of movement, color, form, and space. It is in creating such direct experiences for a client-user that this becomes defined as a necessary phase prior to the abstractive and pragmatic phases of design. This creates a new originating context -- a new paradigm -- to which a client-user will refer, thus creating an alternate model for design programming.
"Assorted Acid. Twenty eight views in publishing format." In Proceedings of the 7th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics. SIGraDi. Rosarió, Argentina: Universidad Nacional de Rosarió, 2003. Acido Surtido is a wide-ranging editorial project free of charge. Whose purpose is to create a place where visual thinking meets and juxtapose at random. Its active principles arise from the chaotic combination, in a 64 x 94 cm sheet of paper, of twenty eight graphic works developed in an independent and parallel way by an equal number of itinerant authors, and based on a frame topic from which plenty of visual ideas are launched. Through this "cadavre exquis" strategy, Acido Surtido calls on the reader's ability to re-elaborate and develop new interpretations, even new for those originally proposed by the authors. Acido Surtido is an offset printed centrefold, with an impression of 2000 copies.
"Between Mnemo and Locus, the interface design from the users point of view." In Proceedings of the 7th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics. SIGraDi. Rosarió, Argentina: Universidad Nacional de Rosarió, 2003. A method is proposed for architectural construction of virtual spaces by using structures of mnemotechniques. Defined as belonging to the mind, it is proposed to conceive the virtual space through architectural methods by adding the use of Mnemonics, which is the art and technique of developing and strengthening the memory. The memorization process itself becomes central in the process of constructing the virtual context. Introducing examples in history and recent art applications in virtual reality, this paper proposes the introduction of mnemotechniques for the architectural spatial structuring of the virtual space.
"Challenges concerning further Development of "Digital Cities"." In Proceedings of the 7th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics. SIGraDi. Rosarió, Argentina: Universidad Nacional de Rosarió, 2003. The present paper discusses topical challenges for a further development of digital cities: recent lines of argumentation in favor of further development of digital cities primarily result from the model theory, the recent planning theory and interdisciplinary applications (e.g. facility management). The findings of the planning theory are to act as a checklist for quality-examinations of activities already performed in the field of "Digital Cities". It has to be focused on the improvement of utilization possibilities of digital cities. The contribution is based on the variety of personal experience with the modeling of digital cities including the experience published throughout the scientific community.
"Computational simulation of natural ilumination through VRML environments." In Proceedings of the 7th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics. SIGraDi. Rosarió, Argentina: Universidad Nacional de Rosarió, 2003. Natural illumination can be considered as one of the major conditioner of the architectonical project, thus it demands an evaluation of it in the proposed architectonical object. Such evaluation can be achieved with graphic representations produced from computational simulations. However, those representations, images usually, deal with the difficulty to provide a better spatial comprehension since they do not allow people to visualize the tri-dimensional space due to it is a static and bi-dimensional representation. Once the interacting possibility can favour the observer spatial comprehension, this possibility was analyzed, creating a VRML environment to present a natural illumination simulation.
"Computer simulation of natural ilumination applied to the building design." In Proceedings of the 7th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics. SIGraDi. Rosarió, Argentina: Universidad Nacional de Rosarió, 2003. The object of that study is the state of the art in computer simulation, when applied to the natural illumination in buildings, in Brasília (15°52 ' south), tropical climate of altitude, hot and dry, with great available iluminance during the year. The used methodology bases on the quantitative evaluation of the readiness of natural light in the rooms of the Hospital Sarah Kubistchek, using the software Lightscape and soon after comparing the results to the Brazilian norms. The objective seeks to make possible your use by architects in the day by day of projecting the space of the building.
"Consolidation Works." In Proceedings of the 7th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics. SIGraDi. Rosarió, Argentina: Universidad Nacional de Rosarió, 2003. The central idea of this multimedia project, is the generation of a digital platform as an instance for the visualisation, confrontation and competition, based on the products created by the different state departments of the Chilean government. The final format will be a interactive TV program, that combine the Internet, the web pages of the state departments, and the audience, in a digital immersive architectural environment TV space.
"CUMINCAD.ES: a First Step Towards Multilingual Digital Libraries in CAAD." In Proceedings of the 7th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics. SIGraDi. Rosarió, Argentina: Universidad Nacional de Rosarió, 2003. This paper presents developments concerning a digital library called CUMINCAD.ES, which includes CADrelated publications in Spanish language. CUMINCAD is an acronym for Cumulative Index on CAD and in this library only publications in English language are archived. While English may be the lingua franca of scientific communication, publications in other languages is important to strengthen local cultures, invent professional terminology, enable technology transfer to those who are not very proficient in English, such as practitioners and students and to provide an incentive for authors to publish in their native languages. CUMINCAD.ES (http://cumincades.scix.net) is a repository complementing CUMINCAD providing a basis for the investigation of multilingual repositories. As this is work in progress, the state of the art will be reviewed as well as the potential for further developments.

"Deconstructing AutoCAD. Toward a Critical Theory of Software (in) Design." In Proceedings of the 7th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics. SIGraDi. Rosarió, Argentina: Universidad Nacional de Rosarió, 2003. AutoCAD maintains a nearly 70% market share in the PC-based AEC sector and wields enormous influence over design and production processes in architectural firms and schools. Such an impact is, perhaps, more than what a single building can hope to achieve. The design implications of such a market monopoly are many. Based on Derridean operations of deconstruction, the paper will deconstruct AutoCAD's latent agenda. The paper will do a critical close reading of AutoCAD for its design preferences, spatial conceptions, worldviews, resistances, stratifications and organizational predispositions with respect to architectural design process. For purposes of brevity, this paper will focus on the architecture of AutoCAD's interface. The results of the paper would be the beginning of a critical theory that can be employed in the process of software design for design professions.

The concern about public space, digital graphic and a non-habitual theoretical background are the elements of an on-process research this paper relates to. The premise of the research is the current uncertain experience of both socio-cultural and physical-spatial public space in an Argentinean intermediate city. The focus is a workshop carried out to explore how forms for the public space may be designed when urban conditions are unstable, such the case of vacant areas, lost places or terrain-vague. Digital liquid shapes and post-structural concepts are alternative resources applied to this exploration that assumes the cultural and material complexity of our urban life.

The designers of information in front of the panorama of it overflows, explosion and saturation of information in Internet, have the responsibility of being guides in this "infoxicación" sea (Piscitelli, 2000), contributing to the administration of the information, synthesizing its complexity and elaborating a message that is materialized in an interface that balances form and function, appealing to an aesthetic and technological dose combined with the appropriate usability, where the access, the distribution and the understanding of the information, is solved and in consequence, the metabolism of the same one and its later assimilation, is facilited.
"Development of an Urban Space of Dynamic and Interactive Comunication." In Proceedings of the 7th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics. SIGraDi. In the last years some central urban places of the city of Buenos Aires has been transformed into a dynamic space of human interaction due to all kind of massive demonstrations that could be from artistic parades to massive protest against the economic policy. The Mayo Square and the Mayo Avenue are the main places for this demonstrations. The paper is concern with various digital techniques that could improve the communication among the different groups.

This paper is born as an answer to the meaningful learning difficulties and academic performance in Spatial and Flat Geometry course on second year Design School at Universidad de las Americas University, Santiago de Chile. The problem is faced from the potentiality that digital environment gives us in representation, display options, shape and projection testing, analysis and non visual accounts to teach flat and spatial geometry within the receptors' codes and coherent with designer's own language.

"Diagnosis and Design of groups of inhabitable forms by means of virtual reality." In Proceedings of the 7th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics. SIGraDi. Rosarió, Argentina: Universidad Nacional de Rosarió, 2003. The design of dwelling groupings and other types of inhabitable groupings of forms, has been a problem of constant reformulation and analysis for architects and urbanizers, to satisfy the necessities of their residents as well as to diagnose their operation. The advent of systems of virtual reality, in particular virtual space patternmakers, allow to take existent data (report) and to let their interaction with project data (design proposal and their evaluation), constituting a powerful diagnosis and design tool. This work takes a program based in virtual reality to evaluate some aspects of a design proposal corresponding to dwelling groupings and its relationship with the sector of a city in which it is implanted.

This work develops their ideas by means of the concept of topologic processual diagram. This threefold concept (topology, process, diagram) is investigated in different areas such Cognitive Science, Logic (Mathematics and Semiotics) and Philosophy, in order to enrich the analyse of its actuation in the field of Topology. In this analysis, the topologic processual diagram is described as an operative-representational medium of spatial structural relations (the object's topology), with three variables: thought, space and time. Finally, this concept is investigated within the realm of the project and representation in Architecture, building up a critical dialogue with diagrams, its use and reference, as performed by paradigmatic contemporary architects.

Anyway we must speak of all the design areas. The use of computer science has a specificity applications that are proper to each area. New technologies and the role of the new graphs in the design process, generate a new aesthetic.

The cd-rom Grande Méier - Digital Diagnosis was created to organize the information obtained from visits to the local studied in disciplines of the course of Architecture and Urbanism at the Federal University of Brazil. Whe made the visits using a digital8 video camera, trying to collect different kinds of information, from interviews to objects found in the streets. The cd-rom is a way to put together different kinds of information: the local material and the statistic graphics. We hope to bring new ideas to the concept of diagnostic products.
"Digital dimensions of Solonópole, Brazil." In Proceedings of the 7th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics. SIGraDi. Rosarió, Argentina: Universidad Nacional de Rosarió, 2003. In the countryside of Ceara state, one of the poorest of Brazil, stays the city of Solonopole. Despite the lack of resources, some applications of information and communication technologies are being employed in daily life, by low income population. Almost all of local schools have computers and also free access to the internet, and so do citizens from their houses but also from a telecentro. This is only possible thanks to the use of free software, as Linux, and radio waves connection.

Digital exclusion is the technical name for the abyss which separates people who have access to IT Information Technology resources from the others who don't have this access. A strong reality in taking-off countries, as Brazil is, which exists in parallel of the social exclusion. This work explains about the scenery of this reality and the attempts to solve this problem and, reflecting about the result of past policies against poorness and starvation in Brazil, finishes talking about the special role that must be played by the basic schools in order to eradicate the digital exclusion in the country.

This paper describes the inter-related use of three digital prototyping technologies by undergraduate students in the Department of Architecture and Building Science at the University of Strathclyde. These are: virtual reality computer graphics (CG), rapid manufacture (RM) of physical scale models from digital data, and acquisition of digital data relating to the shape of a physical object by some form of laser scanning (LS). The paper describes two experiments - one relating to housing, the other to a transport museum - to determine how seamlessly, accurately and usefully the (student) architect can move from one technology to another in the course of design.

In order to configure a necessary infrastructure for discourse on digital futures, we must engage in the hard work of clarifying emergent trends in architecture directly resulting from the influences of digital technology. This paper aims at addressing the necessity for a rigorous and clearly defined infrastructure in the emerging area of digital architecture. A series of critical interrogations results from an examination of relevant literature of which it is intended to frame the discourse on the subject of digital architecture. Some final questions and projections will be offered as a call for future research and pedagogical strategies amongst digitally minded organizations.

When I see the succession of changes I become part of that space made of light. My eyes are the daub. Neither reasons nor topics inspire the moment. Only the pleasure of finding for a few minutes the magic of perceiving and having, apparently without reason, absolutely aware of our being.

The possibility of showing reality through models within the digital environment may only be understood as an approach, partial and relative, to the complex processes of information organization.

This work is a software application where the user will be able to go over a collection of optic art paintings, which are computer generated (they reproduce Victor Vasarely's works style). By selecting two of these paintings, the user will obtain a third one that will inherit their characteristics. The aim of this work is to generate a collection of paintings, which evolve according to the users' taste. For this purpose, we drew the analogies between the genetic evolution of living beings and their natural selection process to adapt themselves to the environment.

This work aims at contributing to the definition of an analysis methodology applicable to hypermedia, Web site and CD rom, about design and architecture topics. It is based on the model of analysis by Aarseth, enlarged for hypermedia. Its purpose is to recognize and describe the features, recurrencies, saturations and differences which characterize them.

"Interactive search and access system to the multimedia files of the Faculty of Architecture by means of its local network or Internet." Access by the users to the system is by means of a specially developed tool, working on the WWW environment.
"Interdisciplinaria Methodologies for the Design of a New Architectures of Data Representation." In Proceedings of the 7th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics. SIGraDi. Data representation architecture can be defined as the organizational, functional, experiential, formal, and media-technological order defining the interaction between data, representation, and user. This paper presents an interdisciplinary methodology to develop such architectures in order to significantly improve real time decision making in complex data environments. We have reported in some aspects of this work elsewhere. In this occasion, we will describe our working methodology based on complete interdisciplinarity, the design process and evaluation protocols. We will show work done for Finance and Network Monitoring. Our long-term goal is to design a new generation of data representation architectures that is applicable to diverse fields.

It also defined the guidelines for the design of a second version of the Digital Facsimile presented from May of 2003 at the Gropius Bau Museum in, Berlin, Germany. The Digital Facsimile of Map of Mexico 1550 is a work in progress of Systems of Representation research group in Media Lab (See: http://cipher.uiah.fi/Systems_of_representation). The Facsimile is being designed by Lily Díaz-Kommonen, Janne Pietarila, and Mariana Salgado.

"Introduction of Space Modeling Technologies in an Initial Course of the Education of Architects." In Proceedings of the 7th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics. SIGraDi. The incorporation of virtual technologies to the learning process in architectural design is still incipient, using graphic software mainly as a rendering tool late in the curriculum. This paper presents an experience carried out with first year studio students, at the School of Architecture of the University of Chile, in which the intention is to incorporate virtual learning as part of the process spatial modification thinking. Through the use of Form Z, friendly software to learn for beginners, applied for simple extrusions, geometric transformations as translation, rotation or scaling, and the transformation of geometries and proportions through the handling of topological levels of polygonal objects. Through increasingly complex exercises we developed an effective complement of a traditional design methodology.

The experimental development of these images follow non-linear processes. The unpredictable character of the results is amazing. These processes generate infinite possibilities of expression; the simulation speed typical of the media and the unpredictability proposed produce a maelstrom of creativity. This digital tool facilitates a wide range of works since space is limitless - there are no fixed parameters- and innumerable techniques and zooms can be implemented. In this virtual space, a simple brush becomes a dripping; likewise, a mask of aleatory selection allows the user to play with concrete shapes and images. Non-scalar volumes and multiplicity are constant throughout.

That was how we decided to start this independent and self-managed editorial project. The Matéricos Periféricos web site (www.matericosweb.com) emerged when the produced material had overdone the diffusion and debate frequency and expectation of the paper magazine. We construct a complementary space to the paper magazine that can spread faster, interactively and widely everything that is published on the paper magazine and other subjects that could not be published for monetary reasons or simply due to real time. Nowadays, Matéricos Periféricos is a net that is trying to install a debate on the contemporary Latin-American culture.

The value of this product lies in using computer resources, animation, video, images and sound, whith a didactic intention.

Hearing and touch may be incorporated into visual representation systems that historically covered creative process, now helped by multimedia. During 2002-2003 we developed an experimental design studio that challenged participants to design architecture from words (using their spelling, pronunciation, location, etc.) and through an inquiry based on the "concept of inwardness". Evoking a word from the association of images and texts as well as seizing its potential tactile and hearing dimensions completed what was a very interactive design process. Such process was utilized to generate images and ideas geared to design/make an "installation" to be displayed at art events.

Artists expressed their desire to have access to space science research and data, and to participate in the process of creating compelling space science related tools and interfaces. New approaches have been suggested by them as regards the presentation of information on a multi-sensorial and intuitive way, all pointing to more effective methods of space science knowledge acquisition.

This paper concisely shows the latest results. In the present report the emphasis is laid on the relations among the operators and their different goals. We studied the preliminary phase of the architectural design, for which we defined a model and implemented a software system. The validity of the software system does not decrease when it is extended to the remaining design phases. The goal of the research is to improve collaboration among operators.

In 1991, Marcos Novak in 'Liquid Architectures in Cyberspace' projected a future of individual and blended realities of things perceived and perceived things - a place of "fertile dreams". Even though the term 'vanguard' seems to have disappeared in our times, my intention is to differentiate ~Pixelism~ from a simple esthetic position or modern wave.
"Post-spatial Architectures: the Emergence of Time-like Parametric Worlds." In Proceedings of the 7th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics. SIGraDi. A new trend is emerging in architecture today: dynamic and time-like architectures (a term derived from the language of Theory of Relativity) that are capable of moving, flexing and reconfiguring themselves through globally networked control mechanisms are emerging. Such buildings maybe "plugged into" the information networks and can be manipulated through remote interaction. Architecture can be published, literally. At this time there is no single theoretical framework available to address such architectural efforts and the paper is aimed at providing a framework under the rubric of "Time-like Architectures". The paper addresses the unprecedented transformation of the spatial and temporal foundations of architecture by a convergence of two technological developments: global real-time information networks and kinetic, pneumatic tectonics. Envisioned and in some cases built by a group of avant-garde architects, time-like architectures are poised to become a norm in a not too distant future. The paper will identify, define and outline few time-like works. The paper will also outline the historical, theoretical and ethical relationships between post-spatial (author's term), post-modern and modern architectures using Charles Jencks' structuralist classification, The Evolutionary Tree.

This project was chosen from the first drafts Concourse of environmental education for the design of a multimedia interactive cd for pupils and a manual for teachers, asked by the Municipality of Rosario-GTZ, Deutsche Gesellschaft Technische Zusammenarbeit GmbH (German Technical Co-operation for Development). The project articulates these two communication resources as self-learning educational tools for the second cycle of Basic General Teaching (EGB) of Argentina. These communication tools are centred in the thematic axis of the management of urban residues. The project considers schools as central social actors in promotion of proactive, sensible and responsible behaviour for a socially integrated conception of the environmental quality of the city.

This paper is about editing ego-shooter games to elaborate and express ideas by means of virtual spaces. Examples from art and workshops with architecture students illustrate these explorations.

Intelligible aspects acquire perceptual shapes in order to make its apprehension easier. In this sense, we understand that virtual simulation is an important tool of cognitive mediation.

This structure allows an open approach to analize urban and architectural relations in a real or in an imagined context.

This article reports on our current explorations on systemizable tasks of architectural design and parametric design supported by rule-based generation methods of spatial configuration alternatives to assist user-design processes of progressive development low-cost dwellings. This exploration is part of an ongoing major research towards an integrated planning support system for low-income housing; we called Esther, which is focused on the development of a network-based set of tools to support logistics of self-designed /-built dwellings life-cycle. Esther addresses the systemized collaborative work between dwellers and specialists during the whole development cycle of dwellings.
"Semantical investigation in geometric virtual environments and interactions with synthetic autonomous agents." In Proceedings of the 7th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics. SIGraDi. Rosarió, Argentina: Universidad Nacional de Rosarió, 2003. This work refers to the geometric modeling of virtual environments, related to its semantics (meaning of environments). These informations of meaning are stored in a data base and organized to be easily accessible through the user interface. This paper explains the experience performed by a group of architecture students during a short term worksop, trying to explore the potentials of new approaches and digital technics applied to urban and architectural design. The main purposes were: the inclusion of objetive information and quantitative data of material significance in order to assist the generation and structuring of the design process. The notions of "diagram", "field conditions", "contextual logistic" and "animation" were the conceptual categories employed to approach the dinamic conditions and time related logics as critical aspects of the flexibility associated with material organizations.
"Separated at Birth." In Proceedings of the 7th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics. SIGraDi. Rosarió, Argentina: Universidad Nacional de Rosarió, 2003. While distributed or collaborative design studios have a long pedigree (Donath 1999), there seldom arises the chance to test the limits of the concepts implied by the idea of the physically separated design team. The indigenous differences of culture, schedules and language accentuate this. The authors entered into an experimental design exercise that would seek to explore the range of dualities, which are often encumbered by such studios owing to their very nature. As an additional catalyst in the experiment, a design topic was chosen which reflected the nature of the studio thereby creating a Gödelian knot of self-referentiality.

The game "Passeio na Praça" is a part of the project "Ludoteca Arte na Escola", developed by the research group headed by the professor Luciana Engelsdorff Leitão. The "Ludoteca" consists of a library of books, games and toys which are specialized in Plastic Arts. The "Passeio na Praça" is a game that intends to transmit the artistic values of the buildings and other elements located in the Coronel Osorio park, the main park of the city. This game, like all the rest os the Ludoteca material, can be used by the teachers of the city schools as a complement in art teaching.
"Studio of Digital Media and New Technologies in the Visual Arts." In Proceedings of the 7th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics. SIGraDi. Rosarió, Argentina: Universidad Nacional de Rosarió, 2003. This paper introduces the pedagogic experience of a course in the Visual Arts Bachelor Degree Program offered by the Facultad de Arquitectura Diseño y Urbanismo at the Universidad Nacional del Litoral, in Santa Fe, Argentina. The class was taught using a combination of Present and Semi-Present attendance through the Multimedia Center of Distance Education (CEMED), and with the support of the Multimedia and Didactic Device Laboratory for the Education (LIDEM), belonging to the said university and school. The workshop dealt with the integration of Digital Media into the Artistic-Creative and Teaching-Learning processes, Despite the lack of electronic equipment of last generation and in the necessary quantity, we achieved interesting and successful results that are relevant to this congress' topics.

We present as an example a story entitled "Invisible Cities" by Italo Calvino in which the author describes an imaginary city. Appealing to mathematical concepts, students seek to design a type of city or architectural space, arising from each student's interpretation of the text. Here, Literature, Design and Mathematics form a framework in which each discipline justifies the presence of the others. In our private case the need of an evolution of the language is presented besides by means of the use of the Digital Graphic.

"Teaching the Use of Creativity in Digital Design and Business." In Proceedings of the 7th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics. SIGraDi. Rosarió, Argentina: Universidad Nacional de Rosarió, 2003. The paper is related to the use of creativity within the design/business model. An educational experiment was conducted where business-oriented and design-oriented students were teamed up to design and propose a creative digital design/business plan. The goal of the experiment was not only to observe the results of the interaction but also to offer some thoughts on the complexity involved in forming groups with members of different background, culture, ethnicity and genre.

Rosarió, Argentina: Universidad Nacional de Rosarió, 2003. This paper aims to discuss new preservation strategies for Rio de Janeiro's Rain Forests threatened by favelas' growth. It is supported by the developing of digital technology associated to urban design practices with a focus turned to a careful watching of the boundaries between the favela and the forest. Our case study is the Favela do Vidigal, situated in the forest, at the top of one of the city mountains and close to the sea. The paper presents a proposal based on people-environment relationships studies, considering the existence of a phisical-virtual limit which could be a permeable balance and control promoting.

The concept of scale can have different interpretations. In this paper the idea of scale as a regulator of abstraction levels is discussed in connection with the concept of representation. In order to design architecture projects, 1st grade architecture students have to understand the space and how to figure it out. To be succeeded in the design process it is necessary to develop their spatial abstraction capability. Each architectural representation tool can contribute for this development. This work shows the pedagogical experience applied to students of the first grade of architecture course at UNICENP, in Curitiba, Brazil, approaching the strategies of different subjects to increase the development of spatial skills using different architecture design tools.

The act of design using the graphic language is esential to the organization and determination of the process. Introducing digital tools modifies the design project research. Its application faces the traditional experience and encourages different demands conceptually and operatively. We wonder if the use of digital media, from the very beginning, is possible or pupils must have trainning in the use of conventional graphic in order to be meaningfull. Our proposition is to include digital technology from the beginnitng of the teaching process, in order to explore the potencial of each mode and promoving to learn the normative background.

So we accept that the potentiality of a computerized diagrammatic model expresses more that simply functional aspects, becoming the representation of thought, problems solving and communication, developing images that allow us to explore and to evaluate alternatives, bringing closer objects that we perceive by means of the senses, as well as those that we imagine or dream of.

Our proposal consists of showing how a PIXEL (a small part of a whole) can have a life of its own when it is taken out of its enviroment. This pixel, alone, is nothing, since it depends on others and a context to actually be something (a figure, etc.). Even though we initially emphasized that the pixel could very well be the main character of a play (which we still believe is true) we also wish to point out that today`s subject is to try to go above and below all studies, technology and even science, to try to find the answer in the most basic facts. The PIXEL now teaches us that "it" is the most noble single element that a digital artist can find. Most certainly, this issue will not add anything to science, and it might not change theories or the world itself; furthermore, we probably will not show anything that is not already known and no intelligent discussion will come up regarding the relevance or irrelevance of the pixel isolated from its context. Still, it is important to remark that the PIXEL, the smallest single creature that I know, has been the issue of many, many discussions and quire a few hours of work.
"The Use of Three-dimensional Scanners and Plotters in Early Design Studios." In Proceedings of the 7th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics. SIGraDi. Rosarió, Argentina: Universidad Nacional de Rosarió, 2003. The paper makes reference to the introduction of a new pedagogical strategy in the teaching of fundamental design in early design studios. The authors recognizes a relationship between the creative process and the media that supports the design process, and proposes the use of 3-dimensional scanners and plotters (rapid prototyping) for interfacing between the use of digital and analogue media. The paper suggests that in such learning environment the students will learn to design without the limitations that analogue or digital media will individually impose in the creative process. The paper ends with an outline for a relevant design exercise.
"The Use of VR Technology in the Assessment of Applicants to Graduate Schools of Architecture." In Proceedings of the 7th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics. SIGraDi. Schools of architecture in North, Central and South America offer admissions on the basis of grade point average and standardized exams on academic aptitude. These indicators may describe the aptitude of students as far as general academic performance is concerned but are limited on describing the creative potential of the applicant. The authors of this paper question this practice and suggest the development of a 3dimensional environment for the assessment of the creative aptitude of future students. The paper also describes the implementation of a prototype of the testing environment and subsequent experimentation.

The Project is about virtual reconstruction of the City of Montevideo (Uruguay), around the year of 1807 (during the English Invasions time), based in all the available graphic and chronical material. Images and movies are focused to remind this time and provide architectonic and urbanistic value to the elements still standing or which might be discovered. The idea is to create useful knowledge for the subjects related to this discipline and be able to take the right decisions about future actions on the area being studied.
"Towards a new mixtopia: to compose "The Book of Sand"." In Proceedings of the 7th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics. SIGraDi. Rosarió, Argentina: Universidad Nacional de Rosarió, 2003. This work introduces theoretical aspects regarding hypermedial composition in virtual environments produced within serveral research projects. This hypermedial system, called "Libro de Arena" and its transference design can be thought as a "mixtopia" about artistic education, the development of knowledge and forms to communicate. The infinite causing a huge unsecurity, stressing the uncertainty. This is our current reality. However, to imagine new "mixtopias" can help us to face that uncertainty, becoming them into horizons where to navigate: imaginary detention in mistake of desire.
"Towards a VR of Hyper-realistic Representation." In Proceedings of the 7th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics. SIGraDi. Rosarió, Argentina: Universidad Nacional de Rosarió, 2003. The objetive of the proyect is the hiperrealistic simulation of scenarios on standard PCs. We use the same tools that are used by the entertainment industry (3d graphics engines) to get the highest level of realism possible in 3d worlds. By now, we are exploring only the audio and visual areas. The potencial of this 3d enviorments construction tools let us to create exploration enviorments for academic and professional implementation like commerce, tourism, education, communication, etc.
"Traditional Cities Vs Digital Cities." In Proceedings of the 7th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics. SIGraDi. Rosarió, Argentina: Universidad Nacional de Rosarió, 2003. This work presents the creation of a Documentary City which has 3D models of buildings and actualized urban spaces, related to a systematic information and hypermediatical, through the use of a Data Base as a digital tool for the construction of a Data Bank, which will be part of the Digital City of Maracaibo and it could be requested on a physical approach or distance way using digital technologies. The virtual reconstruction and documented part of the history of the city and the records of buildings in different historical growing moments of Maracaibo City, since its foundation until now, will permit recover part of the lost memories of the city. This research will constitute a unpublished experience in Venezuela and belong to the Hypermediatical Model of Maracaibo City of the Institute of Architectonical Research of the Faculty of Architecture and Design in the Universidad del Zulia.
"Tunel for interaction with the cyberspace [TIC]." In Proceedings of the 7th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics. SIGraDi. Rosarió, Argentina: Universidad Nacional de Rosarió, 2003. Starting of the reflections on the contributions of the Complex Thinking to the adoption of a new optic, able to embrace questions related to the conception of spacialties in architecture, this project constitutes an experiment of space-time relations enlargement, between subjects and objects, in the design of hybrid spacialities. The project try to put the architect, not only as a conceiver of concrete structures, but also as the subject that conceives hybrid spacialities, the designer of virtual spacialities integrated to the concrete.
"Tvporto." In Proceedings of the 7th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics. SIGraDi. Rosarió, Argentina: Universidad Nacional de Rosarió, 2003. This study is based on the following idea: new technologies extend the possibilities of social interlocution and may consist in an innovation for the formularization of electronic urban politics. The experiment intends to create a space of digital interlocution, which allows a process of information circulation, between all the actors who participate of the renewal of the Rio de Janeiro's Port Zone.
"Understanding Virtual." In Proceedings of the 7th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics. SIGraDi. Rosarió, Argentina: Universidad Nacional de Rosarió, 2003. Since the introduction of terms like "cyberspace" and "virtual reality", the term "Virtual" has been attached to a range of projects including using computers to draw buildings, distributed studio projects and heavily technologically dependent interfaces for "sensing" digitally modeled environments. The only common aspect of these "virtual" projects is their use of computers. As a way to re-infuse meaning to the term Virtual, the paper describes a theoretical basis for understanding the meaning of being virtual (as opposed to being "Real, Actual" or "Possible") with special attention to the manipulation of ideas as is the case in designing architecture.

The technological tools applied to the field of the art allow me to fulfill the projects and searches that were formulated by the historical vanguard: to materialize the simulation of movement, of the virtual, of the simultaneous, of the permanently mutant thing. And also to sustain the values of contemporary art as well as to operate from a notorious devaluation of the referent and, at the same time, with a limitless mimetic freedom to accentuate the crossing of opposite disciplines, which was previously defined by collages, assemblages, photomontages. In this way, I redefine these crossings from images where the certainties on the real thing/that represented/that done/that simulated disappear.
"Virtual Architecture as a Graduating Project: a complete experience." In Proceedings of the 7th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics. SIGraDi. In this paper we define what we understand as Titulation Project, study the various ways to attack such a project in the area of Computer Graphics Applied to Architecture, describing the experience we did with a group of students who worked on their Titulation Project in this area. Three different designs for The Virtual Center for Venezuelan Digital Art are presented as a result of this experience, as well as conclussions on the whole two-semesters experience.

In this paper we will summarize the development of a virtual reality system called MuseV3. This system allows the modification of a basic architectural design and thereby collects preference information about design variations. A technical description of the system as well as a summary of user evaluations is given. In addition, a brief explanation of the methods that were used to elicit user preferences will be given.
"Virtual2Reality: the Virtual Shift of the Geographer s Exploration Paradigm." In Proceedings of the 7th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics. SIGraDi. Rosarió, Argentina: Universidad Nacional de Rosarió, 2003. Virtual2Reality mapping is a remote desktop exploration of the world using world-view and plan-view perspectives similar to that used in the historical geographer paradigm of exploration, the use of maps in support of the physical exploration of specific world locales. This new virtual shift in the paradigm provides real time remote visualization and collaboration using digital panoramic images - mimetic renditions of realworld locales (especially those with limited accessibility). The procedure embeds these panoramic renditions at geographical referenced locales in digital plan-view maps to produce a 'Virtual2Reality' mapping construct. The structure facilitates collaborative spatial decision making by providing a common structure for all stakeholders.
"With that beat... real heart - virtual heart." In Proceedings of the 7th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics. SIGraDi. Rosarió, Argentina: Universidad Nacional de Rosarió, 2003. In my production I seek to unite the diverse both in its form and in its essence: the poetic and the rational, the organic matter and technology, the ancestral and the current. Dialectical pairs that continually play at seducing each other, maintaining their symbolic balance. My artistic searches come back from every corner to the traces of feelings and senses. "With that beating...", operates on an ancestral, symbolic and ritual space which every age updates with its own view. It dwells in irony, where the heart is the emblem of grief, desire and seduction.
"Z-13, Video-Imagination." In Proceedings of the 7th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics. SIGraDi. Rosarió, Argentina: Universidad Nacional de Rosarió, 2003. This paper aims to discuss the importance of the participation of the creative imagination, and of the digital media as well, in the stages of the visual creation. Here the movement and the subtle alteration of the videoimage are devices which open up the project to experimentation and mistake.
